Getting to Know Negative: Negative People with a lot of emotion

On January 23 the melodic hardrock group visited Madrid where we had a chance to chat with lead singer and creator of the band Jonne Aaron.

Soft ballads, explosive guitar riffs, melodies and lyrics dealing with life itself, that is Negative, the group of rock n 'roll from Finland who visited Spain last January.

Created in 1997 the band has released 6 albums: "War of Love" (2003), "Sweet & Deceitful" (2004), "anorectic" (2006), "Karma Killer" (2008), "God likes your style "(2009) and the recent “Neon ".

Although the group began with just three members, it’s currently formed by Jonne Aaron (vocals), Antti Anatomy (bass), Jay Slammer (drums), Larry Love (guitar) and Mr. Snack (keyboards).

At 7 pm on January 23^rd, before the door of the Sala Ritmo y Compas people already waited to enter. Within the venue, the group prepared the stage and relaxed before the concert: Jay and Larry tested their instruments, Snack went from one place to another arranging skeletons and eating and Antti, with no shoes, read a book in the corner of a couch in the dressing room. Meanwhile Jonne, visibly tired, sat with us and answered our questions with a smile and a lot of kindness.

Question: How was the Barcelona show?

Answer: It was really nice, I mean, to me as a singer it was one of the roughest on this part of the tour.

Q: How come?

A: When you do so many shows in a row your body is getting exhausted in some point, but I made it, and I gave all I could from myself and we did a great job, I suppose.

Q: How are you feeling now in Madrid?

A: I feel good. It’s good to be back. Actually, this is the venue where we started here in Spain; it was where we played our first show ever.

Q: How would you describe Negative to someone who’s never heard your music?

A: Beautiful, [pauses], aggressive, maybe not aggressive, but, unacceptable.

Q: Unacceptable?

A: [Speaks in Finnish with Antti which corroborates that it is unacceptable, and suggests surprising.]Yes, yes, Surprising.

Q: Surprising and emotional maybe? You guys classify your music as emotional rock n’roll?

A: Yes, beautiful melodies, twisted with rough guitars, that’s Negative.

Q: It’s been more than 10 years since you guys created Negative. How would you say you’ve evolved?

A: Oh my gosh, first of all, we’ve learned how to play, for example. We were really young though when we started, so… The main idea is the same, it’s still there that it should be fun, that it should be a whole new adventure every time when we go to the studio and start writing new songs. How can I say it? Of course as a human being we’ve grown pretty much. I’m 27, I was around 18 when the first album came out, so I’ve spent my whole teenage years and all the years until now with this band. So I think Negative is a huge part of us, you definitely cannot deny that. And music wise we’ve become even better. But you have to value that shitty side of you as well, because that is the naïve side. When you create something new, you can’t become too good. [Laughs].

Q: You have to keep your feet on the ground?

A: Exactly, exactly.

Q: What are Negative’s plans for the future?

A: Touring, touring, touring, nothing else. Just touring and promoting the new album. And at some point, usually when the new album is out, you already start looking forward to the future with new songs, for the next album. But not yet, we don’t have to hurry with that. We’re going to take our time with touring. We’ve deserved it and I think so because it took almost two years to get the new album together. It was a long process.

Q: I was going to ask you that. How was the process of creating this album? You recorded in Los Angeles with Grammy winner Warren Riker. How was that experience?

A: Ah, you can only imagine [laughs], it was really nice and afterwards it feels even better, [laughs]. You know what I mean? When you get some view on it and some perspective.

Usually we’ve done all the albums in Finland and in our home neighbourhood, as you can say. For example, “Karma Killer” was recorded in the heart of Tampere, and the farthest place we ever went to was Hollola in the middle of Finland, precisely 100 km away from our hometown, and now we were in LA so it was a big change.

Q: Are you thinking about entering the US market?

A: Of course, it’s a big step. I think we still have a lot of things to do in Europe and Asia. For example, we’ve never played in UK and that is the country, territory where we are heading next. After that, maybe it’s some kind of bridge to America, when you make something happen in the UK.

Q: I read that when you recorded the second album, “Sweet and Deceitful” you were about to give up on gigs. How are you feeling about them now?

A: I don’t know, for some reason, usually when you’ve just released your album or made it you get some kind of depression. You can compare it to the depression when a woman is giving birth to a child. They’re getting a little bit down because after 9 months… I would compare it to the process of recordings, but it disappears, you just need some time for yourself. It’s just that I got scared of that, and we all got, well, I don’t know about the rest of the guys, but I got scared, and I felt like music is really exhausting. When you think about it all the time… the process is going on all the time and it’s hard to turn yourself off, so you just have to deal with it. It is part of being what you are.

Q: Do you think gigs are important? For example, in Spain there are a lot of illegal music downloads and they say that what is keeping the music industry working are the gigs.

A: Ok, I agree. In our scene, in rock music there is no shortcut, there isn’t any time machine to happiness, it’s all about hard work and long roads and we’re playing to the people, that’s why Negative was formed, for making shows to the people.

Q: To connect with the people?

A: Exactly, exactly, spreading the message of Negative. That’s the best way to get known as a band.

Q: How about social networks, Facebook, Myspace, Twitter?

A: It’s really important now a days and I think that the net is getting more and more important for Negative. For example, if you think about America both northern and southern…In general, we’re getting a lot of feedback all the time from all over the world from those countries we haven’t been able to visit yet, so it’s been a blessing for us. First I thought it was a curse but then I realized it’s good.

Q: Why a curse? Was it because of all the fake profiles that exist about you?

A: Oh yeah, there is a lot of them, I’ve heard about that, I’ve checked it myself [laughs] ‘cause I got so curious. It’s good. For example, we have a really active Facebook profile on the internet. We update it almost every day, especially on tour, on the road. It’s good and we’ve seen the reaction of the people and the crowd and they really like it and it’s important to stay in touch with the fans, I mean, not fans, with Negative people, that’s how we call them. [Laughs].

Q: On your webpage there is something that says “Negative Legion”, what is that?

A: It’s coming up. It’s going to be like… Kiss has their army, it is going to be precisely like that. Maybe more like fan club meets street team kind of thing. It’s gonna be nice.

The main idea is that there will be a Negative chat were you can chat but you have to log in and you have to have all those passwords and stuff like that. I think that it is part of why we come to play for the people and making shows. It’s part of that because the idea is that in each country there is going to be an international street team, “Negative Legion”, and there will be a president for each country who leads that countries stuff and there will be some posters you can print out, stickers and you can spread the idea and message of our band, and I mean, for free. It’s not your duty or anything like that. It’s for fun. If you feel so you do it. You can be part of Legion if you’re just a lazy ass and want to stay at home and enjoy the music, whatever. But the main idea is that once a year we’re going to have this “Negative Legion awards” in Finland and the president from each country will pick the most hard workers, the most active people and probably they will show up and we’re gonna play there and meet with these people and have some nice tasting food and stuff like that. Some day it’s going to be like the Oscar gala, it will be broadcasted on TV, that‘s the highlight in mind. In 20 years, in 50 years, but you have to start somewhere, even Bill Gates started from a garage.

Q: What has your inspiration been for Neon? Why that title?

A: The working title was a whole lot different at first. Before we even knew that we were going to go to Los Angeles, it was really something different. Soon after arriving in LA we realized that there is a lot of hope in this album and it’s much brighter and it’s not as dark as the previous one, “Karma Killer”, for example.

We just started to think about a different title and I think Larry came up with Neon. First of all I didn’t like it but I had to choose it. And after chewing it and tasting it for a while, it started to feel like, oh my God, that’s cool, I like it. And we got all these great neon lights, different kind of neon signs to decorate the studio.

Actually there are many meanings behind the name, Snack found out that in ancient Greece it means something new. And in Finnish it means “they are” Negative Ne, they, on, are, so that’s the thing, it was some kind of breaking point.

Q: How about the inspiration for the album, going from negative to this new vibe?

A: The inspiration, oh my God, what is the inspiration? Life itself.

A: Snack says: California sun.

A: California sun, Hotel California, [laughs]. That was the inspiration on this one.

Q: Any words for fans and future fans?

A: What would I say… it sounds old cliché, I would like to say, enjoy your time because this life is just a flash in eternity so try to make it possible and don’t take any stress, extra stress [laughs], and enjoy the ride.

And it’s nice to come around time after time with Negative. And we are really glad to see that there are people coming to see our concerts time after time and this second round in Spain especially. It has proved that it’s worth to come around again. So, I’m really looking forward to the next tour. And remember, join us on Facebook, bring your friends and stay Negative.

Negative: Rock n' Roll with true feeling

The Finnish group left an irremovable imprint in Madrid during their concert on January 23rd

Young or old, accompanied or alone, boys or girls, no matter the age, gender or who they listen it with, the music of Finnish band, Negative, is suitable for all and the concert held on January 23^rd at Ritmo and Compás was a great example of this.

At five o'clock, when the group was barely arriving at the venue there was already a small queue waiting for the show. Initially, the doors were scheduled to be opened at eight o'clock in the afternoon, but due to problems outside the organization, the welcoming band was cancelled and the doors would finally open at nine.

At about 21:05 the crowd which had been steadily growing as the day wore on was allowed inside. Little by little the concert venue filled up and after another hour long wait, the opening chords of the group’s intro began at 22:00. Onto the small stage of the Sala Ritmo y Compas climbed Mr. Snack on keyboards, Larry Love on guitar, Jay Slammer on drums and Antti Anatomy on bass. The voice was that of Jonne Aaron, the group’s creator.

The catchy "No One Can Save Me Tonight" from the latest album, “Neon”, was the song chosen to begin the show. Next they played "The Moment of Our Love" single from their debut album “War of Love”.

While Jonne bounced back and forth around the stage, singing and dedicating smiles and winks, Jay hit the battery with emphasis, Antti stuck out his tongue and did not bother to fix the handkerchief that had slid over his eyes, and Larry and Snack sung the choirs while playing their instruments with intensity.

The audience was likewise displaying their affection for the band as they loudly sang to the lyrics and jumped or lifted their fists.

The room vibrated with songs like "Giving up", "Blood on Blood" or their particular version of "My, My / Hey Hey" by Neil Young. The sound quality was good and the group was clearly giving it all. Pouring sentiment into every song, it was clear why these guys define their music as “emotional rock n’ roll.

After singing their latest single "End of the Line", Jonne announced "a different version of Neverending Parade" and left the stage accompanied by all but Snack and Larry. Without saying anything they both began to play an amazing instrumental version of keyboards and guitar of "Never ending parade" that left everyone speechless.

They stepped off the stage to staggering applause and cheers that continued even as Jonne returned on set, this time with an acoustic guitar in hand. After thanking Larry and Snack whose names were still being chanted, he thanked all who participated in the European tour, his manager, sound technicians, marketing vendor, the bus drivers and of course, everyone present.

He then explained he was going to play something special, a song which lyrics he had written at age 16 and apparently touched he launched himself into singing "Still Alive".
The small venue allowed for an intimate and welcoming atmosphere, and the possibility of hearing the comments shouted from the audience. That led to more than one joke, for example, Jonne betting that he would give 5 Euros to the person that guessed the next song correctly, asking people if they were having a good time and humming the chorus of "I gotta feeling" from The Black Eyed Peas, or discovering that in the room there were people of all nationalities: Swiss, German, Finnish, English and Spanish of course.
Since it was the last performance of the European tour, Jonne invited the attendees to suggest a song to sing acoustically. An English man suggested "Lust n 'needs" and Jonne readily agreed, admitting that the last time he had sung that song he had done it wrong because he started from the second verse. This time there were no errors. Furthermore, Jonne bettered himself and adeptly bonded one song with another, almost moving the audience to tears as he sung with passion and sensibility the end of "Fucking Worthless."

After the heart-warming acoustic, the group reappeared and the room went wild once more. "Jealous Sky", "Frozen to Lose It All", "Since You've Been Gone" the never before played live "Days I'm living for" and finally, "Planet of the sun" confirmed the group's powerful live act.

At 23:15 the lights were dimmed and Negative said goodbye. Not easily fooled by this quick retreat the crowd began to chant the typical Spanish “oe oe”. The group soon returned to end a superb concert with 3 more songs, including "Love that I lost" and "I won’t let go."

At 23:45 the real end arrived. Negative took several bows, threw sweaty towels, drum sticks and left to an applause that did not die down for at least a good 5 minutes.

The magic of the night had ended, but the vibrating public left behind after the roller coaster of feelings that the group had evoked was proof of what Negative is really good at: powerful and emotional rock n’ roll.

LACRIMAS PROFUNDERE: Out of Nowhere, going Somewhere

Rock and sad is how the German band Lacrimas Profundere describe their own music. Although it was initially formed as a band of doom metal with classical elements, the group created in 1993 by Oliver Schmid has transformed their music over the years.

It was in 2002 with the melancholic gothic rock album "Fall, I Will Follow" where they found their identity. Their latest album, released in April 2010, "The Grandiose Nowhere" is a demonstration of this unique blend of ballads and metal.

After several lineup changes, the group currently consists of lead guitarist and composer Oliver, Rob Vitacca on the microphone, Tony Berger as a second guitar, and Korl Fuhrmann on drums.

On the 10th of December Lacrimas Profundere played at the Temple of Metal Festival in Bilbao where we had the opportunity to talk to them and ask Oliver some questions.

Question (Q): Tell us about this latest album, The Grandiose Nowhere- What was your inspiration?

Answer (A): We did a tour last year in October, and after the tour we had some kind of burnt out, but the studio was booked and the flight for the producer was tight so we said ok, let’s go record it.

We send stuff via mail. I recorded my songs and send it to him, he put his vocals on it and for 6 months or so like this we built a demo together. After the tour, it was like a month on the road with Deathstars, Dopestars and Diary of Dreams, a very huge German band, and after this tour it was too much; too much of beers, too much of alcohol. And we said, hey, let’s do nothing for a year. But then we entered the studio recorded this album and this album throws a speck into the business in my opinion. Everybody loves the songs of the record, the whole band members.

Normally, if you record a CD you have your favorites. Normally what is your favorite is not the favorite of all the other members. One member says oh I like these 5 songs, I like these 3 songs, I don’t like this song blablabla. This was the first time in my life the band said hey, we love all the songs and that makes me a little bit proud.

If you produce an album the next thing is to put the songs in the right direction. Then the next thing is when the label says you have to shoot a video clip and asks you which song you would prefer. That’s the next fight in the band: I want this, and I want this, and in this record “the Letter” was the song the whole band said yes, that’s it.

The whole press came to the studio and listened to the CD for the first time and the guy that writes the review for the biggest German Goth magazine, came up to me after listening to “the Letter” patted me on the back and said “fantastic song. I like it.” There were so many people that loved the songs.

There were many first times on this album; first time the whole band doesn’t have to fight, first time everyone likes the videoclip, first time the whole band loves all the songs.

Q: A new start?

A: Not for the band because the people outside didn’t know that we hated each other [they all laugh].Perhaps it’s a new start, we’ll have to try and see how long it lasts.

Q: What was the best part of recording the album?

A: Someone says: Oli was not in the studio. [General laughter]

A: We recorded this album in parts and if you went to the studio you played your part and then you drove back home. But, if I sit at home and I know the other guys record their stuff it’s something like this, I have to call: [pretends to dial] -hey, hey what’s up?- and they say “no, no, no, not Oli again, hey, please let us work.- 20 minutes later, -hey guys please do this and this and that and that” – “ok we will do it”. and then, [pause] I’m sure that, [pause] This time he’s not my best friend anymore (referring to Rob) and we have fights together not with fists but with words. But at the end the result is the important part.

The best part of recording the CD… There is no best part because recording is hard work, I hate to record CD’s, but the best part is when you listen to the songs the first time, when they are finished in the studio and all the parts are together: the keyboards, the vocals and stuff like that and you get an idea how the songs work. And the next best part is always when the label sends us the finished product CD and it’s all new and exciting and you kiss it, smell it, [laughs].

Q: This is the last 2010 gig for the Grandiose Nowhwere, what are the plans for the future?

A: I have a family, two little kids and for me it’s very, very, good to celebrate Christmas and the holidays with my family without the band and stuff like that. There was one time we had a tour and we had a concert to play on the 25h of December. And I went home to my family and all the other stayed on Christmas day. I tried to go home to my family and it was drive with train from 2 o’clock in the morning to the next airport in Frankfurt. Then waiting, waiting, waiting to arrive in the airport at 4 and wait till 7 or 8 o’clock till the next plane left to Munich. But if you arrive in Munich I’m not at home. I have to wait ‘till the next train and about 2 hours later I arrive home. And I say hello to my wife, the children, to my parents, then you eat something and you say hey, I have to leave! We have a concert to play. This trip cost me about 25 hours and I stayed at home 3 hours. So this year it is so great that I don’t have to play any concerts or tour and can celebrate Christmas with my family and without stress.

Q: How about after the holidays? You guys had to cancel the tour in the US, are there any plans to go back to that?

A: We have a working visa that cost 2.500 dollars and this working visa runs till the end of August 2011 so we have to do a tour in the US till August otherwise all that money was for nothing.

Q: I read in an interview that as soon as you’re done recording an album you start working on another one. Are you already working on new songs?

A: Yes, I’m always composing songs. I have about 7-8 songs for the next album.

For this album I composed 40 songs and 30 songs were complete crap. But if you compose the song you don’t know it is crap, you like it, but 3 days later you play it and you’re like, what the fuck? You compose about 40 songs and then choose about 10 of them and send them to the other guys and if the other guys and depending whether they like them or not, then you have about 5 songs [to work with] and you continue like this. So it costs time and you have to start to compose a song soon after the recordings or it takes about 4 years until you release the next album.

Q: You came in September to Madrid and now Bilbao. What are your expectations for the Spanish market?

A: It is our first time in Bilbao, we hope, but we don’t know. In Madrid it was always great, and we played in Barcelona too, one time, two times. So it’s our first time in Bilbao. I don’t know, we hope that some people like it.

Q: Do you guys use the new technologies, Facebook, Myspace, Twitter, etc?

A: We have to, you have to. At the moment we have Facebook, we have Reverbnation, Myspace.

Q: Do you think they have any use beyond being in touch with those that are already fans of the group?

A: Oli: I don’t know. How about you Rob?

A: Rob: They have use. Facebook is a great thing because you reach people in a short time. You can reach thousands of people with one post. At the moment Myspace doesn’t work very well because Facebook is so big. It’s a great thing. We’ll see how long it works.

Q: Any words for your fans and future listeners out there?

A: Hello. I am it. Be careful. Buy our album and make us rich and famous, please. Otherwise we will find you [laughs]. Thank you.

Bienvenidos al Templo del Metal en Bilbao/ Welcome to the Temple of Metal Festival in Bilbao

Bienvenidos al Templo del Metal

La ciudad de Bilbao celebró los días 10 y 11 de Diciembre su primer Festival en honor a la música metal.

“Corría un 17 de diciembre en la cola de AC/DC cuando vinieron a Bilbao. Hicimos cola desde las 8 de la tarde hasta las 3 del mediodía pero nos quedamos sin entrada. Y esa noche tan gélida nos juntamos unos cuantos que no nos conocíamos de nada y dijimos ¿cómo hacemos para solucionar estas cosas? ¿Y si hacemos una asociación metalera? Y así surgió la idea de hacer la asociación.”

Son las palabras de Iñaki Muñoz, uno de los creadores de la Asociación Temple of Metal. Asociados con el concurso de bandas locales Villa de Bilbao, la asociación se compromete todos los años a hacer un concierto, pero este año decidieron hacerlo a lo grande y crearon el primer festival Temple of Metal que tuvo lugar el pasado día 10 y 11 de Diciembre.

El Festival fue creado con la idea de dar a conocer a los grupos locales y además atraer a los fans del metal con dos cabezas de cartel de origen internacional. El sábado tocarían Darkness by Oath, Waldheim, In Loving Memory, y los italianos Theatre des Vampires como banda principal. Pero la inauguración del festival el viernes correría de mano de Evil Seeds, Dabelyu, Estampida y los alemanes Lacrimas Profundere.

Cualquier cosa que se haga por primera vez puede dar pie a fallos o imprevistos. Uno de los mayores contratiempos a los que tuvieron que hacer frente los coordinadores del Temple of Metal fue la repentina baja del grupo Evil Seeds. La organización supo actuar rápidamente y colocaron al grupo Rasen en lugar de Evil Seeds para abrir el festival.

Desconcertantes. Esa es la palabra que a uno le viene a la mente cuando ve a Rasen por primera vez. Cuatro chicos en el escenario, tres de ellos vestidos en su propio estilo y manera y una cuarta figura vestida de novia sangrienta que acapara toda la atención: Sei, el cantante. Mientras el resto del grupo permanecía inmóvil, centrándose en tocar, él se movía sin parar. Llegó incluso a bajarse más de una vez del escenario y pasearse entre el público a la vez que cantaba. Sin duda, todo un showman.

Rasen fue más que un espectáculo digno de ver. Los jóvenes músicos ofrecieron un sonido en el que se percibía una mezcla de influencias pero cuyo resultado era definitivamente acertado.

Tras este grupo novel, el death metal melódico de Dabelyu tomó control del escenario de la iglesia reformada en sala de conciertos. Inicialmente, al cantante, Ángel, apenas se le oía y la lírica de canciones como “Malas Pulgas” o “Vuela Lejos” se perdían entre los potentes acordes de los instrumentos. El problema se resolvió y la música de Dabelyu retumbo en una sala con una excelente acústica pero que desafortunadamente no completaba su aforo.

De repente, tras la finalización de Dabelyu, la sala se empezó a llenar. Con la llegada de los argentinos afincados en España, Estampida, el Temple of Metal Festival cobró vida. “Nuestras balas son los instrumentos”, declararon Estampida al salir al escenario vestidos de soldados.

Su crítica a la sociedad y la política no se quedo sólo en su intenso trash metal, sino que uno de los mejores momentos de su actuación fue cuando tras una pausa volvieron a tomar el escenario vestidos de religiosos. Cual buen Papa, Lucas Valenzuela, el cantante, bendijo a los fervientes asistentes, que por fin llenaban toda la sala.

Desgraciadamente, al igual que llegaron con Estampida medio público volvió a desaparecer con el fin de su actuación. No obstante, aún faltaban por tocar los cabeza de cartel de la noche, los alemanes Lacrimas Profundere.

Lacrimas Profundere pisaron el escenario con ganas y fuerzas, entonando la canción “Lips” de su último disco “The Grandiose Nowhere”. Con canciones como “We shouldn’t be here”, “Dear Amy” o “Be Mine in Tears” derrochaban energía. Pero exceptuando las primeras filas con algunos fans acérrimos del grupo, los asistentes escuchaban pero no participaba activamente. Puede ser que el cambio de trash metal a rock gótico fuese demasiado súbito, o que tantas horas de concierto sin ropero para dejar las cosas o sitio para comprar bebidas, acabaran por desinflar el espíritu del público.

La razón no estaba clara, pero Lacrimas Profundere lo siguieron intentando. Su rock gótico sonó con poderío y vigor durante un par de canciones más, pero por mucho que los músicos (sobre todo los guitarristas Tony y Oliver) intentaban arrancar los ánimos, la sala se mantenía pasmada.

Quizás la visible indisposición del cantante, Rob Vitacca, y que el público no acababa de reaccionar hizo que los ánimos del grupo se desinflaran perceptiblemente a medida que transcurría el concierto. El resultado fue una actuación de los Lacrimas Profundere breve y que no pasó de ser sencillamente correcta. Una verdadera pena considerando la cantidad de energía que la banda ha exhibido en otras actuaciones y que les hacen dignos de ser vistos en directo. No obstante, el grupo alemán demostró ser muy atentos con sus fans al salir a firmar y hacerse fotos con ellos al término del festival.

Aunque el viernes la sala no estuvo llena del todo, el equipo de la Asociación Temple of Metal logró poner en marcha un primer día de festival sin apenas incidencias.

El sábado era el turno de Darkness by Oath, Waldheim, In loving Memory, y Theatre des Vampires. Two Times M tuvo la oportunidad de escuchar el final del concierto del grupo Waldheim. La mezcla de la voz gutural de él y la melódica voz de ella recordaban a Draconian, y aunque el grupo se encontró con varias dificultades técnicas, es un grupo que suena bastante bien.

Sin embargo, la gran expectación de la noche estaba en la banda italiana Theatre des Vampires. El grupo liderado por la cantante, Sonya, puso en marcha un espectáculo. Desde sangre saliendo de su boca a libros quemados, pasando por cambios de vestuarios (aunque ella iba más bien ligera de ropa para regocijo del público masculino), y un poquito de ayuda del playback hicieron que su concierto fuera un excepcional final de el primer festival del Temple of Metal.

Welcome to the Temple of Metal

The city of Bilbao, Spain hosted its first Temple of Metal Festival on December 10^th and 11^th

"It was December 17^th and we were in the queue to grab some AC/DC tickets for when they came to Bilbao. We were there from 8 pm to 3pm and we didn’t’ make it. So that chilly night, some of us got together and we said, how do we fix this sort of thing? How about we make a metal association? And so, 1 month later we did it.”

This is how Iñaki Muñoz, one of the creators of the Temple of Metal Association in Bilbao, Vasque Country, explains its creation.

Associated with the contest Villa de Bilbao, the organization does a concert each year, but this year they decided to make a grand event out of it and created the first Temple of Metal Festival which took place on December 10^th and 11^th.

The Temple of Metal Festival was created with the purpose of publizing local groups and attracting metal fans with the inclusion of two international headliners.

Evil Seeds, Dabelyu, Estampida and the German band Lacrimas Profundere were the ones in charge of ianugurating the festival.

However, things done a first time can always give way to unexpected mistakes or incidents. One of the largest set backs that the organizers had to face was the last minute drop out of the group Evil Seeds. Fortunately, they reacted quickly and replaced them with Rasen.

At first glance this group from Bilbao was puzzling. Four men on stage, three dressed in their own particular style and a fourth, the singer, dressed in a bloody white wedding gown.

The man dressed in white, Sei, is undoubtedly a showman. While the rest of the group stood motionless focusing on playing, he moved nonstop, jumped around and even stepped down from the stage and wandered between the audience, all the while singing. Songs like “Fire”, “Silent “ or “Tonight” displayed a mixture of influences, but overall a sound that sounded good.

Dabelyu came up next. Initially, the singer, Angel barely could be heard and the lyrics of songs like "Malas Pulgas” or “Vuela Lejos” could barely be heard among the potent chords of the instruments. However, once the problem was solved the group’s metal rumbled through a venue with an excellent acustic but that was unfortunately half-empty.

As their name suggested, there was a sudden stampede when the Argentinean (settled in Spain) group Estampida appeared. The Temple of Metal Festival came to life as the band dressed as soldiers cramped on stage and stated “our instruments are our bullets."
Criticisms of society and the world around us did not stay there. After disappearing for a few minutes the band came back on stage accompanied by two monks and dressed as religious icons. The singer dressed as the pope blessed all the attendees and continued playing a powerful trash metal which was fervently received by the crowd. Unfortunately, after Estampida left the ancient church turned into concert venue once again became half empty.

However, the headlining band of the night, Lacrimas Profundere, still had to play. The group took the stage with force, singing “Lips” from their latest album "The Grandiose Nowhere." Songs like "We shouldn’t be here”, “Dear Amy” or “Be Mine in Tears” were full of energy but except for some die-hard fans at the front row, the rest of the room remained impassive. Guitarists Tony and Oliver didn’t give up and demonstrated their skill while trying to encourage the audience.

Perhaps the visible indisposition of singer Rob Vitacca (although he tried his best introducing songs, animating the boys and girls to scream…) along with the fact that crowd didn’t seem to find it in them to react (maybe the change from Trash metal to Goth metal had been too much for the viewers) made the group’s energy die down as the concert progressed. The result was a brief and correct concert on behalf of Lacrimas Profundere. A real shame considering the amount of energy the band has displayed in other concerts and which make them well worth while to see live. Nonetheless, after the show the german group demonstrated their attentivness with the fans and came out to sign, take pictures and talk with the audience.

Just as fast as it had started the first day of the festival was over and though the venue was never totally full, the team from the Association managed to launch a successful first night of a festival.

On Saturday it was the turn of Darkness by Oath, Waldheim, In loving Memory, and Theatre des Vampires to play. Two Times M had the chance of hearing the end of Waldheim’s concert. The mixture of male guttural vocals with melodic female vocals reminisced of Draconian. Although the band had several palpable technical difficulties their music seems worth a try.

However, the great expectation for the night was the Italian band Theatre des Vampires. The band led by singer Sonya puts on a great spectacle. From blood spurting from her mouth, to a burning book, or several costume changes (although she was scantly dressed which was definitely an asset for the male audience), along with the help of a little playback made the concert an exceptional final act for the first Temple of Metal Festival.

Without a doubt if the Association keeps working hard and continues on this path, The Temple of Metal Festival could become something big in the metal circles. For now though Iñaki assures us: "we are already working to bring groups next year and continue."

En el Mundo de Therion

El pasado día 13 de noviembre Two Times M se adentró en otro mundo de la mano de la música de Therion. El grupo natural de Suecia presentó su último disco en un concierto en la Sala La Riviera.

A las siete de la tarde salieron a tocar sobre un escenario con un espacio bastante reducido, los teloneros Loch Vostok y a las ocho, Leprous. Aunque con mucha energía, ambos grupos pasaron sin pena ni gloria, y sólo ante la mención de Therion se apreciaba una reacción por parte de los asistentes.

El momento que todos esperaban llegó sobre las nueve de la noche, después de un breve arreglo en la disposición del escenario y la inclusión de un piano clásico. La primera canción en sonar fue ni más ni menos la que da título al nuevo disco: “Sitra Ahra”. El grupo fue saliendo uno por uno: Johan Koleberg en la batería, Lori Lewis, soprano, Christian Vidal y Christopher Johnsson con las guitarras, Waldemar Sorychta en el bajo, Thomas Vikstrom, tenor, Katarina Lilja soprano y Snowy Shaw, tenor.

Con los músicos interactuando entre ellos como si de una obra de teatro se tratase, la actuación se desenvolvió con fluidez ante los ojos de los presentes. Las letras contaban historias y las melódicas voces entremezcladas con las notas musicales metaleras y clásicas las hacían cobrar vida. “Wine of Aluqah”, “Typhon”, “Perennial Sophia”, incluso el endiablado “Hellequin” llegó a tomar forma con la inclusión de unas máscaras.

El ambiente era idóneo: sonrisas, pelos de punta (Thomas Vikstrom no dejaba de indicar que los coros del público le ponían los pelos de punta), Snowy incitando a todos a saltar…pero fue el homenaje a Mozart con “Dies Irae” lo que logró una ovación atronadora. Aplausos que se convirtieron en puños alzados con nuevos acordes que retumbaban en la sala.

“The Siren of the Woods”, “ljusalfheim”, “Ginnungagap”, “Kali Yuga part 3”, “Clavicula”, “Lemuria” (presentada en español por Lily) fueron sólo algunas de las piezas que sonaron del extenso repertorio de Therion. Finalmente, tras “Unguentum Sabbati” las luces se apagaron y el grupo abandonó el escenario.

Durante unos minutos sólo se oyeron voces que gritaban una y otra vez una palabra“¡Therion!” Nadie estaba preparado para irse a casa. Los suecos no hicieron oídos sordos a las suplicas y no tardaron en volver y lanzarse a tocar “The Rise of Sodom and Gomorrah”. Entonces, Christopher Johnsson dio paso a que Christian Vidal dijera unas palabras. El argentino, emocionado, se confesó ante el público: “Quiero que sepan que hace muchísimos años mi bisabuelo partió para argentina desde acá, y para mi hoy estar acá tocando para ustedes es muy importante y estuve llorando gran parte del concierto.” Tras una ensordecedora aclamación, Christopher retomó el micrófono: “Después de 23 años la gente aún se alegra de vernos y eso es fantástico.” A Madrid, donde había el doble de gente que en Barcelona Christopher dedico las tres últimas palabras de la noche: “To Mega Therion”. Una última canción que puso el broche de oro a una noche donde el metal y lo clásico se volvieron a fusionar a la perfección gracias a Therion.

Into Therion's World

On November 13^th Two Times M stepped into another world. Its host was none other than the Swedish group Therion which introduced their latest album “Sitra Ahra” at La Riviera.

At seven pm, the opening band, Loch Vostok climbed on stage. At eight, Leprous took its turn. In a small stage, the progressive metal bands did the best they could to encourage an audience that was clearly only interested in the headlining band: Therion.

The big moment came at about nine o'clock, after a brief arrangement on the stage setup and the inclusion of a classical piano, adorned with a flower vase.

To the sound of “Sitra Ahra”, the song that gives title to their latest album, Therion went on stage: Johan Koleberg on drums, Lori Lewis, soprano, Christian Vidal and Christopher Johnsson with guitars, Waldemar Sorychta on bass, Thomas Vikström, tenor, Katarina Lilja, soprano and finally, Snowy Shaw, tenor.

With the musicians interacting with each other as if the show was one big play, the concert unfolded smoothly. Songs became stories that sprung to life with the clear melodic voices and the perfect musical symbiosis between classical and metal. "Wine of Aluqah", "Typhon", "Perennial Sophia", even the devil "Hellequin" took shape with the inclusion of some masks.

The atmosphere was ideal: smiles, hairs-on end (Thomas Vikström kept indicating that the participation of the audience, singing with loud clear voices, made goosebumps rise on his arms), Snowy encouraging everyone to jump ... but it was the tribute to Mozart with "Dies Irae" which won a sudden thunderous ovation. Soon enough, applause became raised fists as new songs vibrated through the venue.
"The Siren of the Woods", "ljusalfheim", "Ginnungagap", "Kali Yuga part 3", "Clavicula", "Lemuria" (presented in Spanish by Lily) were just some of the pieces that sounded in the extensive repertoire of Therion . Finally, after "Unguentum Sabbati" the lights dimmed and the band left the stage.

For a few minutes the only sound was the chorus of voices requesting that Therion go back on stage. The Swedes were not deaf to the pleas and soon returned to play "The Rise of Sodom and Gomorrah." Then, Christopher Johnsson gave Christian Vidal the microphone so he could say a few words. The Argentine, excited, confessed to the audience: "Please know that many years ago my great grandfather left for Argentina from here, and for me today to be here playing for you is very important and I have been crying through most of the concert." After deafening cheers, Christopher spoke up: “After 23 years people are still happy to see us and that’s great.” In Madrid where there was more than twice the people than in Barcelona, Christopher dedicated the last three words of the night: “To Mega Therion!” One last song which put the finishing touch to a perfect night where metal and classical music merged thanks to Therion.

Apocalytpica: Metal Clásico

El grupo visitó Madrid el pasado día 14 de Octubre

Inicialmente la cola no parecía muy larga, pero a medida que Two Times M se acercaba a la Sala La Riviera (Virgen del Puerto s/n) la imagen de una multitud de personas, vestidas casi todas de negro, daba la vuelta a la esquina.

La organización siguió el horario a rajatabla. Tal y como anunciaban en la entrada, el local abrió sus puertas a las 20:00 en punto.

La sala no se llenó del todo, pero eso era lo de menos, ya que el público asistente para ver a Apocalyptica era entregado y fiel a la banda de origen fines.

A las 20:30 salieron a tocar los teloneros, Livingston. En apenas media hora dejaron huella. Con un rock suave con melodías pegadizas y muchísima energía, los ingleses divirtieron a los asistentes que coreaban y daban palmas. Incluso llegaron a dar las gracias a España (y en concreto a la zona de Marbella) por ser la inspiración de su segundo disco Sign Language.

Otra media hora después y tras una breve preparación del escenario salieron a escena a las 21:30 los esperados Apocalyptica: Paavo, Perttu, Eicca con los chelos y Mikko en la batería. Aunque al inicio del evento el sonido no era el mejor, a medida que avanzaba la noche pudimos apreciar una gran mejoría.

El repertorio fue variado. Desde las versiones de “Seek and Destroy” y “Master of Puppets” de Metallica, pasando por “Quutamo”, “Bittersweet”, o “I don’t Care”. El pasado día 5 de Octubre el grupo estreno nuevo disco, 7th Symphony y también tocaron piezas del álbum como por ejemplo “End of me” o “2010”.

Eicca dijo en un momento “veo un montón de caras sonrientes”. Era cierto. El público lo dio todo, pero sólo porque ellos ofrecieron lo mejor de ellos. Desde botes a headbanging, coros, voces, bromas, chelos alzados en alto, muchos “Perkele!”, risas, pelos en la boca y por supuesto una calidad musical que sólo Apocalyptica es capaz de alcanzar.

The band stopped by Madrid last Thursday, October 14th

Initially the queue did not seem very long, but as Two Times M approached Sala La Riviera (Virgen del Puerto s / n), the image of a crowd of people dressed almost all in black, turned around the corner .

The organization followed the schedule to the letter. As announced on the ticket, the venue opened its doors at 20:00 o'clock.

The place was not filled to the brim, but that mattered little, as the audience to see Apocalyptica was devoted and true to the band of Finnish origin.

At 20:30 the group in charge of the opening act, Livingston, appeared on stage. In just half an hour they left a positive impression. A soft rock with catchy melodies and lots of energy, entertained the audience who chanted and clapped along. The English, thanked Spain (and in particular the Marbella area) for being the inspiration for their second album Sign Language.

Another half hour later and after a short preparation, Apocalyptica took the stage at 21:30 as expected: Paavo, Perttu, Eicca with cellos and Mikko on drums. Although at the beginning of the event, the sound was not the best, as the night progressed, there was a big improvement.

The repertoire was varied. From versions of “Seek and Destroy” and “Master of Puppets” by Metallica, through “Quutamo”, “Bittersweet”, or “I do not Care”. On October 5^th the group released their new album, 7th Symphony and the band played new pieces such as "End of me" or "2010."

Eicca said at one point "I see a lot of smiling faces." It was true. The audience gave their all, but only because Apocalyptica offered their best.

Head banging, choruses, jokes, raised cellos, many Perkele!, laughter, flying hairs, and an undoubted musical quality that only Apocalyptica is able to obtain.

Primer Festival Gótico de España: Madrid se oscurece

Nada es perfecto la primera vez que se hace. El I Spain Gothic Festival definitivamente no lo fue, aunque el tiempo, lluvioso y gris, parecía acompañar el ambiente siniestro.

Cuando Two Times M llegó al recinto a eso de las 19:45 de la tarde se encontró con una sala sorprendentemente vacía. Quizás el hecho de que Lacuna Coil tocará ese mismo día en la Riviera tuviera algo que ver, o quizás la gente simplemente no estaba interesada en los grupos de ese día. Eso parecía pues los pocos asistentes estaban bastante más pendientes de hablar entre ellos que de lo que ocurría en el escenario. Es más, el público incluso parecía haberse marcado una barrera invisible entre el escenario y ellos. Era como si la cosa no fuera con ellos.

Sea como fuera, los grupos a los que tuvimos el privilegio de ver, intentaron dar lo máximo de sí mismos. Al llegar, nos encontramos con The CureProject, los cuales aunque hicieron el esfuerzo, no pudieron tocar nada. Tal y como nos explicó la organización a los pocos minutos de una actuación bastante fallida, les habían robado todo el material en el aeropuerto de Italia. El público se lo tomó con comprensión y tras un aplauso, siguió a lo suyo.

A los pocos minutos Ahráyeph ya habían montado sus cosas. El público algo más interesado se acerco al escenario, pero aún así siguieron dejando ese misterioso espacio. Aunque los asistentes estaban divididos entre aquellos claramente entregados al grupo y su música y los indiferentes, Ahráyeph lo dio todo de sí, y logró animar bastante la sala.

A medida que la actuación de Ahráyeph llegaba a su final, la sala empezaba a llenarse. Estaba claro que el mayor interés del día 17 de Septiembre estaba puesto en el grupo alemán Qntal. Como prueba de ello, tras finalizar Ahráyeph la multitud se abalanzó a buscar un hueco delante del escenario. En algo menos de medio hora, Qntal ya tenía montado sus instrumentos. Una organizadora salió para agradecernos nuestra presencia y pedirnos de parte de Syrah, la cantante de Qntal, que por favor no se fumara durante la actuación. Cosa que no se cumplió del todo, incluso por parte del equipo técnico de la organización.

Con una sala bastante más llena pero sin llegar al aforo completo, el grupo salió a escena y arrancó con los acordes de “Translucida”. Desde el comienzo el grupo se entregó al máximo. Pudimos apreciar no sólo el gran nivel de compenetración entre ellos, con bromas, sonrisas furtivas, y bailes entre Syrah y Mariko (la violinista y corista) sino también la entrega del público, el cuál no dejaba de moverse y corear como buenamente podían las letras de Qntal.

Tanto Syrah como Michael Popp, se lanzaron a hablar español. Popp que confesó que era la primera vez que hablaba castellano en público incluso dio una pequeña lección de historia en lo referente a lo gótico. El repertorio fue variado con canciones como “Departir”, “Entre Moi et Mon Ami” (la favorita de Syrah, según nos contaron), “Flamma”, o “Palestinalied”. No falto “Ad Mortem Festinamus” que se llevó una gran ovación por parte de los asistentes.

Desgraciadamente, la sala decidió echarnos a dos canciones de finalizar el concierto. Tocaron una, pero claramente disgustado, Fil, intentó convencer a los organizadores que les dejaran tocar al menos una más. ¡Lo consiguieron! Tocaron “Veni” y pusieron un fin apoteósico a un Festival que de momento se había presentado como poca cosa, pero que prometía al día siguiente ser mucho más.

El Sábado día 18 de Septiembre, con un tiempo todavía inestable, Two Times M se presentó en la Sala Penélope, Madrid, también sobre las 19:40. El local estaba bastante más lleno que el día anterior. Al poco tiempo de nuestra llegada, comenzaron a tocar Merciful Nuns. Aunque las máquinas de humo a veces no dejaban ver al grupo, el público estaba bastante entregado a la actuación.

Seguidamente, subieron al escenario los alemanes Lacrimas Profundere. Empezaron saltando con “We shouldn’t be here”; seguido de “Be Mine in Tears”. Rob Vitacca, el cantante, se mostró bastante taciturno al principio ocultando sus ojos detrás de unas gafas de sol, pero al poco, libre de gafas y chaqueta, brindaba con el público y daba las gracias tras tocar canciones como “My little fear”, “The Letter”, “My Mescaline”, “Ave End” o “A Pearl”. Al margen de las máquinas de humo que no dejaban ver el escenario y estaban sofocando a los asistentes (y seguramente al grupo también), el corto concierto de los Lacrimas Profundere estuvo bien, pues aunque las primeras filas estaban rendidas a los encantos de los alemanes, se podía apreciar que muchos de los asistentes tenían ganas de ver a Diary of Dreams. Quizás por esa razón, Two Times M, encuentra que Lacrimas Profundere no lo dio todo de sí como podría haber hecho.

Afortunadamente, tras la actuación de los Lacrimas, y tras la insistencia de la primera fila, la organización desvió las máquinas de humo. Aún más gente pareció llenar la sala ante la inminente salida de Diary of Dreams. El concierto se quedo corto. Adrian Hates y compañía comenzaron a tocar alrededor de las 22:45 y finalizaron antes de las doce de la noche. Sin embargo, fue intenso. El público estaba rendido a los pies de Adrian, Gaun:A, Flex, Torben y D.N.S. De un lado para otro, invitando a los asistentes a corear canciones como: “The Wedding”, “She and her Darkness”, “Kindrom” o “HypoCryptickAl”. Un bis compuesto por “The Curse” y “Amok”, puso el broche final con una velada casi perfecta.

Cabe mencionar, que en ambos días, es una pena que tras los conciertos se diera tan poco tiempo para comprar merchandising. Apenas salían los grupos del escenario que la sala ya nos estaba echando. Por lo demás, en general, esperamos con ansias que el año que viene podamos tener un Spain Gothic Festival II.

I Spain Gothic Festival: The Darkness takes over

Nothing is perfect at first. The I Spain Gothic Festival definitely was not, although the weather, rainy and grey, seemed to make for the perfect atmosphere.

Two Times M arrived at the premises at about 19:45 pm and found a surprisingly empty room. Perhaps the fact that Lacuna Coil was playing that day in the Riviera had something to do, or maybe people just were not interested in the groups playing that day. As a matter a fact, it seemed people were much more interested in talking to each other than paying attention to what was going on at the stage. Moreover, the public marked an invisible barrier between the stage and themselves. It was as if the whole concert had nothing to do with them.

Whatever the case, the groups which we had the privilege of seeing, tried to make the most of themselves. Upon arrival, we found The CureProject on stage. Although they made an effort, they could not play anything. The organization explained after a few minutes of unsuccessful trying that the group’s material had all been stolen in the Italian Airport. The audience took it with understanding and after a round of applause, kept to his own.

A few minutes later Ahráyeph had mounted their stuff. The public, showing more interest approached the stage, but still continued to leave this mysterious space in between. Although the participants were clearly divided between those surrendering to the group and their music and the indifferent, Ahráyeph gave the best of themselves and uplifted the environment.

As Ahráyeph’s show drew to a close, the room began to fill. It was clear that the interest of the September 17^th shows was on the German group Qntal. As proof, after Ahráyeph left the stage, the crowd rushed to find a space in front of it. In less than half an hour, Qntal already had assembled their instruments. An organizer came to thank us and ask us from Syrah, Qntal singer, behalf to please not smoke during the performance. All, including the technicians, did not meet this requirement.

With an almost full room, the group took the stage and began strumming the chords to "Translucent". From the beginning of the show Qntal gave their all. We were able to assess not only the high level of rapport between them, with jokes, furtive smiles and dances between Syrah and Mariko (the violinist and backing vocalist) but also the commitment of the public, which kept moving and chanting Qntal’s lyrics as best they could.
Both Michael Popp and Syrah, had a shot at speaking in Spanish. Popp confessed that it was the first time he spoke publicly in Spanish and even gave a little history lesson regarding the Gothic roots. The repertoire was varied with songs like "Departed," "Entre Moi et Mon Ami" (a favorite of Syrah, as we were told), "Flamma" or "Palestinalied." They did not miss out on "Ad Mortem Festinamus" which gained a standing ovation by the audience.

Unfortunately, the Venue’s organization decided to kick us out two songs away from the end of the concert. They allowed Qntal to play one more. However, clearly upset, Fil, was able to convince them to let them play another one. “Veni” put a great finale to a Festival which promised to be much more the following day.

On Saturday September 18th with still unstable weather, Two Times M arrived at Sala Penélope, Madrid around 19:40pm. The place was much more crowded than the previous day. Shortly after our arrival, Merciful Nuns began to play. Although smoke machines sometimes did not allow us to see the band, the audience was devoted to the performance.

Soon after, the Germans Lacrimas Profundere took the stage. They began their act with an energizing "We Shouldn’t be here" followed by "Be Mine in Tears." Rob Vitacca, the singer, was rather taciturn at first hiding his eyes behind sunglasses, but soon, free of glasses and jacket, he cheered with the public and thanked everyone after great songs like "My little fear" "The Letter", "My Mescaline", "Ave End" or "A Pearl". Apart from the annoying smoke machines which did not permit us to see the stage and were suffocating attendees (and probably the group too), the Lacrimas Profundere concert was short but good. For although the front rows had surrendered to the charms of the Germans , it was clear that many participants were keen to see Diary of Dreams. Perhaps for that reason, Two Times M, thought that Lacrimas Profundere could have given a whole lot more.

Fortunately, after the performance of Lacrimas, and the insistence of the first row, the organization turned the smoke machines around. More people seemed to fill the room with the imminent release of Diary of Dreams. The concert was brief. Adrian Hates and company began playing around 22:45 and ended before midnight. However, it was intense. The public totally surrendered at the mercy of Adrian, Gaun: A, Flex, Torben, and D.N.S. Adrian moved from side to side, inviting the audience to chant along with him songs like "The Wedding", "She And Her Darkness", "Kindrom" or "HypoCryptickAl." An encore consisting of "The Curse" and "Amok”, put the finishing touch to an almost perfect evening.

It is worth mentioning that on both days, it is unfortunate that after the concerts the audience was given so little time to shop for merchandising, for we were thrown out almost as soon as the last group abandoned the stage. Nonetheless, we look forward to next year and having a II Spain Gothic Festival.

Spain Gothic Festival: Madrid celebrates its first gothic music festival

This fall concert season is arriving with vehemence. From September through December only, Spain is expecting visits from: Lacuna Coil, Apocalyptica, Dark Tranquility, Madrid is the Dark Fest, Alice Cooper, Therion, Finntroll and 30 Seconds to Mars among many others.

For starters, next Friday September 17th the first Gothic Festival in Spain will take place: "I Spain Gothic Festival." With an impressive and varied line-up, the festival is held from 16:00 pm in Sala Penélope, in Madrid (Calle Hilarión Eslava 36 - Metro Moncloa).

LA FURIA ROJA ARRASA!

España proclamada campeona del mundo en el Mundial de Fútbol de Sudáfrica

Las palabras se quedan cortas a la hora de describir la euforia en la que se encuentra ahora mismo España tras ganar por primera vez la Copa del Mundo de la FIFA.
El arduo partido que casi acaba en penaltis, finalizó cuando durante los 30 minutos adicionales de prórroga, alrededor del minuto 116, Andres Iniesta, marcó el gol ganador en contra de los Países Bajos.

Hasta entonces, el juego había sido bastante tedioso. Ambos equipos jugaban agresivamente, con paradas constantes por una u otra falta, pero el record se lo llevó el equipo naranja, con nueve tarjetas amarillas, tres más que en la final de 1986. Es más, los Países Bajos incluso tuvieron que jugar con un jugador menos cuando Webb, el árbitro, expulsó a John Hietinga.

No faltaron oportunidades para marcar, pero bien por falta de puntería, pelotas muy altas, o por el trabajo de los porteros Stekelenburg (Países Bajos), e Iker Casillas (España), jugadores como Robben o Villa no pudieron marcar.

Sea como fuera, fue una batalla bien peleada que acabó con un simple 1-0, pero que hizo que los gritos de victoria de España se oyeran más allá de las fronteras del país. Los españoles ya no sólo eran los ganadores de la Eurocopa, sino que por fin tenían en sus manos la deseada Copa del Mundo.

Esta tarde, los jugadores llegarán a Madrid para celebrar en su hogar, su primera Copa Mundial de Fútbol. ¡Felicidades España!

Spain wins the Soccer World Championship in South Africa

Words are not enough to describe the euphoria, with which Spain is currently going through, after winning last night the FIFA World Cup Championship.

The tough game that almost resulted in a penalty tiebreaker, came to an end when in the 30 minute overtime, around the 116th minute, Andres Iniesta scored against the Netherlands.

Up until then, the game had been quite unattractive. Both teams played aggressively, but the Oranje, broke a new record with nine yellow cards, three more than in the 1986 final. The Netherlands even had to play one man short when Webb, the referee, kicked John Heitinga out of the game.

Scoring opportunities where aplenty, but they were sourly missed either by bad aim, high balls, or the work of goalkeepers Stekelenburg for the Netherlands and Iker Casillas for Spain, which kept players like Robben and Villa at bay.

Nonetheless, it was a battle well fought that ended with a simple score of 1-0, that enticed shouts of victory to be heard all over Spain and beyond. The Spaniards now hold not only the European title, but also the much desired World Cup title.

This afternoon, they are expected in Madrid to celebrate with their home country their first ever World Championship title. Congratulations Spain!

La selección española en la final de la Copa Mundial de Sudáfrica 2010

España hace historia. Por primera vez, desde que se inició la Copa Mundial de la FIFA en 1930, el equipo de fútbol español ha llegado a una final.
Anoche, el equipo rojo, jugó contra lo que había sido hasta entonces una inmejorable selección alemana, puesto que anteriormente, Alemania ya había destrozado a dos pesos pesados del fútbol, Argentina e Inglaterra, con cuatro goles por partido.

La afición española veía posible seguir adelante puesto que en 2008, durante la Eurocopa, Alemania ya había perdido contra España, cero a uno. Ayer el marcador acabó con los mismos números.

Con un equipo dirigido por el español Vicente del Bosque, la furia roja mantuvo el control del balón durante la mayor parte del juego y trató de anotar en más de una ocasión. A una Alemania cansada de correr de un lado a otro, no le quedó otra opción que perseguir las veloces sombras de Andrés Iniesta, Pedro o Sergio Ramos. Sin embargo, fue Puyol en el minuto 72 tras un lanzamiento a corner de Iniesta quien con un cabezazo marcó el gol definitivo. Con esta victoria, el domingo a las 20:30 GMT, España jugará contra otro equipo que ha llegado a la fase final por primera vez en 32 años: Holanda. El espectáculo está garantizado.

Spain makes it into the 2010 South Africa World Championship finals

For the first time ever, the Spanish soccer team has reached the World Championship finals.
Last night, the red team played against what had been up until then an unbeatable Germany. The Germans had previously destroyed two heavyweight teams, Argentina and England, with four goals over each one.

This did not scare the supporters of the team, for in 2008, during the Euro Cup, Germany was beat by Spain zero to one. Last night, the score was repeated.

With a Spanish team lead by Vicente del Bosque, the red fury had control of the ball throughout most of the game and tried to score on more than one occasion. A tired out Germany was left to chase the shadows of Andres Iniesta, Pedro or Sergio Ramos. However, it was Puyol the one that marked the winning goal during the 72nd minute, when Andres Iniesta launched a corner kick and he topped it off with a header into the back of the German net.

With this victory, on Sunday night at 20:30 GMT, Spain will play against another team that has made it into the finals for the first time ever in over 32 years: The Netherlands. The show is on.

Según Elpais.com el Supremo ha dado la razón a la Agencia EFE a la hora de imponer que sus redactores literarios utilicen cámaras de video para captar imágenes y sonido sobre las distintas informaciónes. Según Efe esto se hará siempre y cuando sea justificado por la propia naturaleza de la noticia.

Sin embargo, yo me pregunto: ¿Cuándo requiere una noticia ser grabada en video? ¿De verdad se puede asegurar que EFE no se aprovechará de sus redactores literarios para grabar cualquier cosa en video y de esa forma prescindir de contratar a expertos en tratamiento audiovisual?

Sea como sea, una cosa sí está clara: el periodista de hoy debe saber hacer de todo, quiera o no.

Rest in Peace Paul Gray

Paul Gray, Slipknot's base player died on May 24th. The cause of his death still remains unknown, though the initial autopsy could not determine any foul play or traumas. Currently, the forensics are awaiting the results of a toxicology test. Death because of drug abuse is not discarded, since Gray had previously been sentenced to a year of informal probation due to drug possession in 2003.

The musician, one of Slipknot's remaining original members, was known for his fingerstyle technique and for playing left handed. He has left behind his wife Brenna and their unborn child. In remembrance of their friend, the band gave a press conference yesterday evening, which you can watch here.

Rest in peace, Paul Gray. Your family, fans and music industry will all sorely miss you.

Google celebrates 30 years of Pac-man

Google goes beyond simple doodles to the first ever interactive doodle in honor of Pac-Man's 30 years. Around the word Google, a playable Pac-Man video-game has been set up with its original 256 levels. Also, instead of the usual "I'm feeling lucky"button, the words have been changed to read: "insert coin".

To play, simply click on the image and wait a few seconds. Google also does a tribute to Ms. Pac-Man. Once the game begins, click on insert coin and you'll find her on screen with her own theme music. Both games will be available for the next 48 hours.

Pac-Man was an arcade game developed by Namco in the 1980's. Consistent over the years, it has included several sequels and even the appearance of new characters such as the mentioned before, Ms. Pac-Man. The brand was so succesfull that from 1982 to 1984 there was even a tv-show produced by Hanna-Barbera. A new Pac-Man video-game release is expected for this year.

Google va más allá de simples doodles e introduce por primera vez un dibujo interactivo en honor a los 30 años del video-juego Pac-Man. Ronnie James Dio passed away on Sunday May 16th after losing the fight against a stomach cancer.

Recognized for popularizing the use of the metal horns (he claimed his grandmother used it to ward off evil spirits), Dio, one of the most powerful singers in heavy metal, led a life devoted to music.

Born in 1942, in New Hampshire, USA, as Ronald James Padavona, he was classified as “the single most important vocal technician in the history of heavy metal” and was part of several influential heavy metal groups.

It all began with the assembly of Elf, which worked as the opening act for Roger Glover’s, Deep Purple. Dio’s powerful voice caught Richie Blackmore’s ear, so when he abandoned Deep Purple and created Rainbow he recruited him. After abandoning Rainbow, in 1979, he joined Black Sabbath, replacing Ozzy Osbourne and revitalizing the group until 1982. He then went on to form a band with Vinny Appice, former Black Sabbath member, which they named Dio, due to the commercial appeal of the name. Finally, in 2006, he formed part of Heaven and Hell, a collaboration featuring other Black Sabbath members, such as Tonny Lommi and Geezer Butler.

Through it all, he also made several collaborations with for example, Roger Glover in 1974, Deep Purple from 1999 to 2001, Girlschool in 2008 or the Christmas Compilation “We wish you a Metal Xmas and a headbanging New Year” with several artists, also in 2008.

Heaven or hell, over the rainbow, wherever he is, he will be sourly missed and never forgotten. He will pass on to be what he was already in life: a legend of heavy metal.

Ronnie James Dio, murió el domingo día 16 de mayo, después de perder una lucha contra un cáncer de estomago.

Reputado por haber popularizado el uso de los cuernos del Heavy Metal (decía que su abuela los utilizaba para espantar el mal de ojo), Dio, una de las voces más potentes del heavy metal, vivió una vida dedicada a la música.

RIP PETER STEELE

Peter Steele, born, Petrus T. Ratajczyk, died on April 14th 2010.

Peter, was the lead singer, bassist and composer for the great metal band Type O Negative. After playing with Fallout and Carnivore, Peter created in the 1980’s Type O Negative. His voice was deep, sultry, low, heavy: incredible. His lyrics were dark, foreboding, humorous, and treated themes such as death, sex, or despair. All of it united with the music of the rest of the band created an amazing group that released in 1991 their fist CD Slow, Deep and Hard and which now, with Peter’s untimely death have ended their career with Dead Again, released in 2007. Peter and Type O Negative were an inspiration to a lot of today’s music groups (for example HIM), and to a lot of people in general.

A unique man, Peter went through a lot in his 48 years: clinical depression, drug abuse, incarceration at Riker’s Island, interment at the psych ward at King’s County Hospital… However, during all his ordeals, he maintained a towering presence over his band and metal music in general (and I’m not referring to his 6 foot 7 height or his Playgirl photographs).

His death will leave a hole in the Metal world that will not be easily replaced, if it ever is at all.

“Everything dies, everything dies…oh God I miss you, I really miss you.”

We’ll miss you Peter. Rest in Peace.

Peter Steele, nacido bajo el nombre de Petrus T. Ratajczyk, murió el día 14 de Abril de 2010.

Peter, era el cantante, bajista y compositor del gran grupo de metal Type O Negative. Después de tocar con Fallout y Carnivore, Peter creó alrededor de 1980 a Type O Negative. Su voz era profunda, sensual, seductora: increíble. Las letras de sus canciones eran oscuras, sombrias, pero también tenían humor...y trataban temas como la muerte, el sexo o la desesperación. Todo ello unido a la música del resto de la formación de Type O Negative, creó un grupo asombroso que lanzó su primer disco Slow, Deep and Hard en 1991, y lo que ahora será su último disco debido a la prematura muerte de Peter, Dead Again en 2007. Peter y Type O Negative han sido una inspiración para muchísimos grupos (por ejemplo, HIM) y para muchísima gente en general.

Un hombre único, Peter atravesó muchas cosas en sus 48 años: depresión clínica, abuso de sustancias, encarcelación en Riker’s Island, internamiento en el psiquiátrico del Hospital King’s County… Sin embargo, en todo momento mantuvo una significante presencia sobre su grupo y la música metal en general ( y no me refiero a sus 2 metros y pico de altura o su famoso posado en la revista Playgirl).

Su muerte ha dejado un vacio en el Metal que no será fácilmente remplazado, si es que alguna vez pudiera serlo.

Bob shrugs him off as crazy until he ends up in Iraq as a foreign correspondent for the war and instead meets psychic warrior, a.k.a. Jedi-warrior, Lyn Cassady (George Clooney). Cassady is on a secret mission: to find the founder of the New Earth Army, Bill Django (Jeff Bridges). Bob is certain that a great story lies behind all this and goes in for the ride. Together, both men will live the craziest adventure you are capable of imaging.

Crazy, delirious, surrealistic, and absolutely hilarious. "The Men who stare at goats," will keep you laughing almost from beginning to end. At times, you'll wonder if the script writers weren't high when they wrote this satire. At other times, you'll think that they're dead on to something.

Directed by Grant Heslov, and with an exceptional cast formed by George Clooney, Ewan McGregor, Jeff Bridges and Kevin Spacey among others, the movie "The men who stare at goats," is based on the book with the same title, by Jon Ronson. In his book, Ronson explores across three decades, the connection between the US government, New Age concepts and the treatment of the paranormal. The movie, therefore, can be a big critique to senseless war, the US army and the psychological techniques used. Nonetheless, unless you want to, there is no need to take the film seriously, because really, you won't stop laughing through it all.

Con eso en mente, Bob, entrevista a Gus Lacey, un psíquico que dice haber pertenecido al Ejército de la Nueva Tierra.
Bob lo tacha como loco hasta que acaba en Iraq como corresponsal de guerra y se encuentra con el guerrero psiquico, acá guerrero jedi, Lyn Cassady (George Clooney). Cassady está en una misión secreta para encontrar al fundador del Ejército de la Nueva Tierra, Bill Djanco (Jeff Bridges). Seguro de que detrás de todo esto hay una gran historia, Bob se va con Lyn. Juntos ambos vivirán la aventura más disparatada que os podáis imaginar.

Loca, delirante, surrealista, y absolutamente tronchante. “Los hombres que miraban fijamente a las cabras”, te mantendrá riendo desde principio a fin. Algunas veces, te preguntaras si los guionistas no estaban colocados cuando escribieron esta sátira. Otras veces, pensaras que tienen mucha razón respecto a algunas cosas.

Dirigida por Grant Heslove, y formada por un elenco excepcional como George Clooney, Ewan McGregor, Jeff Bridges y Kevin Spacey entre otros, “Los hombres que miraban fijamente a las cabras”, está basada en el libro del mismo nombre de Jon Ronson. En su libro, Ronson explora la conexión entre el gobierno estadounidense, el New Age, y el tratamiento de lo paranormal. La película por lo tanto, puede ser vista como una gran critica a las guerras sin sentido, al ejército norteamericano y a las técnicas psicológicas utilizadas. Sin embargo, a no ser que el espectador quiera hacerlo así, no hay necesidad de tomarse en serio una película con la cual uno apenas para de reír.

Las Incongruencias del Cine

A la hora de estrenar nuevas películas, siempre en España se ha producido un retraso de al menos dos o tres meses con respecto al país de donde procede originariamente la película. Hasta ahí todo normal. “Alicia en el País de las Maravillas” de Tim Burton se estrena en vez del 5 de marzo, el 16 de abril; “The princess and the frog” (Tiana y el Sapo) se estreno en diciembre en Estados Unidos y aquí el 5 de febrero; “Daybreakers” se estrenó el 8 de enero Estados Unidos y el 6 de enero en el Reino Unido, en España está previsto el estreno para el 26 de Febrero. Así podría continuar eternamente.

Sin embargo, desde mi punto de vista no es comprensible que se tarde casi 6 meses en estrenar una película como “The Road” (La Carretera), y sobre todo, no entiendo como es posible que una película tarde casi 4 años en salir. Esto último es el caso de “I’m not there”. La película sobre Bob Dylan que obtuvo nominaciones a los Oscar en 2008 (Cate Blanchett como mejor actriz secundaria), a los Golden Globe, los BAFTA, que tuvo presencia en festivales de renombre como el de Venecia, se estrena casi cuatro años más tarde en España.

Por otra parte, encontramos casos como “Avatar”, cuyo estreno fue casi global, el día 18 de Diciembre, o de la reciente “Shutter Island” que se ha estrenado en casi todas partes el 19 de Febrero.

Por un lado, vivimos en un era de globalización, dónde las fronteras se difuminan para crear un todo. Por otro lado, estamos en una sociedad dónde prima la rapidez, es decir, el aquí y ahora. La mayoría de los espectadores quieren ver las películas en el momento de su estreno, no dos o tres meses más tardes. Este retraso, (además de los precios abusivos de las salas de cine o de la comodidad que puede suponer ver una película desde el salón de casa), es lo que conduce a la descarga ilegal de cine en Internet. ¿La solución? En manos de la industria del cine.

The incongruities of movies

When it comes to releasing new movies, Spain has always had a delay of at least two or three months, with regards to the country where the film originally comes from. Tim Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland” will be released in American theatres on March 5th, in Spain on the 16th of April; “The Princess and the frog”, was released sometimes in December, in Spain, it was released two weeks ago, on the 5th of February; “Daybreakers”, released in the United States on January 8th and in the United Kingdom on January 6th, is yet to be released in Spain, it should come out next Friday. I could go on and on with titles that have taken months to appear in Spain.

However, from my point of view it is uncomprehensible that it took almost 6 months to deliver “The Road”. But, it is beyond my grasp that a film takes up to 3 years to be released. This is the case of “I’m not there”. The flick about Bob Dylan, obtained Oscar nominations in 2008 (Cate Blanchett as best supporting actress), Bafta nominations, Golden Globe nominations and it was present in important festivals like the Venice Mostra, and yet, it is being released in Spain almost 3 years after its original release date.

On the other hand, we have cases like “Avatar” which was almost globally released on December 18th, or the recent Shutter Island, which is set for release in most countries on February 19th.

On one side, we live in an era of globalization, were frontiers are becoming a blur, and where a whole is being created. On the other side, we live in a society which prizes speed and currentness, that is, the here and now. Most spectators want to see movies the moment they are released, not two or three months late. This delay in cinemas (besides the abusive prices to actually watch a move, and the comfort one finds in watching a movie in their own house), is what is in part, conducting to an increase in illegal downloads from the Internet. The solution lies now in the hands of the film industry.

La subida del IRPF supone un descenso de sueldo para 10 millones de contribuyentes

No suelo hablar de la economía ni de la política porque son temas que no me agradan y que suscitan mucha polémica pero hoy haré una excepción.
Hoy a muchos de vosotros al ver vuestra nómina de enero se os habrán quedado los ojos como platos. Habréis llamado corriendo al departamento de nóminas o de administración de vuestra empresa, intentando averiguar por qué cobráis menos.

En mi caso, debido a que el departamento de administración de mi empresa se marcha a las tres los viernes, me puse a investigar. Sospechaba y no iba mal encaminada, a que esta bajada tendría que ver con alguna de las medidas anti-crisis de Zapatero. El titular del Diario Expansión, confirmó mis sospechas: “El Gobierno sube el IRPF en la nómina de enero a diez millones de contribuyentes”.

En fin, no me voy a extender mucho ni contaros el problema que para mi y mi familia suscita esta rebaja de sueldo, ya que sólo soy una más de los aproximadamente 22.972.500 trabajadores activos en España (según el Instituto Nacional de Estadística) que se encontraron con esta "alegría".

Eso si, simplemente recordaros que en Junio también sube el IVA. ¿Qué será lo siguiente? Quizás, un corralito argentino.

Puede parecer la típica película de "el heroe que salva el mundo" pero, Avatar tiene sin duda algo muy especial que hace que valga la pena ser vista.

En la humilde opinión de Two TImes M, James Cameron ha abierto la puerta a un nuevo mundo fantástico que puede resultar ser un éxito de grandes proporciones.

¿Arte Moderno o una ventana rota?

Aprendiendo a la intemperie

Quizás, nos estén preparando para salir a la calle a trabajar como corresponsal o reportero. ¿Quién sabe? Tal vez la imagen que veis es en realidad una gran obra de arte titulada, "la naturaleza al vivo". Desgraciadamente, dudo que cualquiera de los dos supuestos se ajuste a la realidad. Más bien, la foto es una imagen de la ventana del aula 524 de la facultad de Ciencias de la Información de la UCM.

Parece mentira, pero esa preciosa rotura lleva haciendo compañía a los alumnos desde el día 5 de octubre, es decir, cuando comenzaron las clases. Al principio, tenía hasta cierta gracia, ¿cómo se habrá roto la ventana? ¿Un alíen? ¿Una pedrada? ¿Un botellazo?
Sin embargo, éramos concientes de que cuando llegase el frío lo pasaríamos mal, ya que de por sí, las aulas son bastante frías.
Nos empezamos a quejar. Desde la conserjería de la quinta planta hasta la de la primera han oído las quejas de los alumnos. Sin embargo, la gerencia de la tercera planta se limita a comunicarnos que "ya tienen nota de la incidencia".

A día de hoy, 11 de diciembre, cuando el frío empieza a apretar, (los servicios meteorológicos avisan de que un temporal de frío siberiano llegará a España el Domingo http://www.europapress.es/nacional/noticia-temporal-frio-siberiano-llega-domingo-nieve-cotas-bajas-descenso-generalizado-temperaturas-20091211151156.html) la ventana sigue en las mismas condiciones.

Ni un misero cartón para evitar que entre tanto frío. Lo único, cerrar las cortinas, pero cuando el viento sopla....
A las Universidades les recortan los presupuestos y deben vigilar sus gastos… pero una ventana rota, por donde se escapa la calefacción; que impide que se puedan abrir las cortinas y aprovechar la luz diurna, y por donde cuando llueva entrará agua, mojando los muebles, y estropeándolos… no hace más que incrementar esos gastos.

En fin, parece ser que no quedará otra que seguir quejándose y esperar que a la vuelta de las vacaciones de Navidad podamos dar clase sin guantes, bufandas y abrigos como elemento impuesto.

Learning Outside

Maybe, they’re trying to teach us how it would feel to work as a reporter or a correspondent in a cold country. Maybe, the image you see above is in reality, a great work of art entitled “live nature”. Unfortunately, neither of the two theories adjusts itself to reality. What you see in the image, is the window of classroom number 524, of the Communications faculty in the UCM.
This precious hole has been accompanying the students since the 5th of October, that is, the first day of class. At first, it was kinda funny, How on earth did that window break? An alien? A stone? A bottle? However, we were conscious that when the cold arrived, the humor would be gone.
Therefore, we started to complain. From the reception of the fifth floor, to the one on the first floor they have heard our complaints. However, the management of the third floor limits itself to tell us that “they have taken note of the incidence”.

Today, 11 of December, when the cold begins to increase, (weather services have foreseen that a gale of Siberian cold will arrive in Spain by Sunday), the window is still in the same conditions.

No cardboard to cover it and avoid some of the cold. The only solution is to close the curtains, but when the window blows…

Universities have to reduce their budgets, but a broken window, from which the heat escapes, from which you cannot open the curtains and take advantage of the natural light, and from which when it rains water will come in and wet the furniture, thus ruining them, only means an increase in costs.
It seems, that we will have to continue complaining and hope that by the time we return from the Christmas holidays we can take our classes without gloves, scarves and coats on.

Curiosa estampa la que nos hemos encontrado al bajar a la cafetería para desayunar: El Capitán Pescanova, Mr. Proper (ahora se llama Don Limpio), el mayordomo de Tenn, la mujer de Ferrero Rocher, los payasos Micolor y el Langostino de Pescanova...
Todos coleccionado firmas, regalando camisetas y manifestandose en contra de la reforma de Ley General de la Comunicación Audiovisual.

Según dicen, El Gobierno pretende aumentar con esta ley los minutos de publicidad de 12 a 29, lo cual llevaría a una saturación de programación, aburrimiento del espectador y acabarían con la publicidad. Actualmente, la situación es de 12 minutos de publicidad, más 5 minutos de otras formas de publicidad.

Amazing Sonata

It was cold on November 28th. It seemed that with the arrival of Sonata Arctica, Winterborn and Delain, autumn had finally made it to Madrid.

However, the low temperatures did not stop the hundreds of fans from patiently waiting for the venue, Sala Heineken, to open their doors. They did so at seven o’clock sharp and little by little the audience began to fill the not nearly large enough auditorium.

As Two Times M entered, we discovered that on a tiny stage Winterborn already played. They were a guitarist short and the sound quality was not outstanding, but that did not stop them from giving great music and receiving a warm round of applause and several raised hands in exchange.

Soon after, Delain, the band from Holland made their enthusiastic appearance on stage. Charlotte Wessels, Delain’s singer, smile and good humor were contagious as she thanked over and over the Madrid fans for being there. The stage was still not nearly big enough for their 5 members, yet the happy band as was whispered around, made a great show and definitely warmed up the assistants.

Time seemed to fly by and soon enough the public waited patiently for Sonata Arctica to make their appearance. Half an hour passed and there was no sign of the group. After 40 minutes people began to whistle and cat call. Though the stage was assembled, and the sound proof had concurred perfectly, fear gripped everyone’s heart as they recalled the cancelation of gigs from the past two weeks.

Finally, after an hour of waiting, at ten minutes to ten, the instrumental of “Everything fades to gray” began to blare through the speakers and the Finnish power metal group came forth. Tony Kakko’s bright green shirt was overlooked as he stepped on stage with a white hospital mask and explained that he had just come from the hospital. “I don’t have the swine flu, just the common flu,” and as if nothing had happened, Sonata Arctica’s music took over the Heineken venue.
An array of songs from both their new album, “The days of grays”, (“The last amazing grays,” “As if the World wasn’t ending”, or “Juliet”), as well as songs from their first cd, “Ecliptica” (which was celebrating its ten year anniversary) such as “Replica” or “fullmoon”, among others, were intensely played by a seemingly hyper Tony and a tired band. At one point, even Charlotte was invited by Tony to go up and stage and sing with him an emotive, “Last Drop Falls”.

Hyper, without losing his smile, yet definitely tired and sick. In the sidelines we could see as every song finnished that Kakko would huff and sigh quietly. More than once, he sat down on the edge of the stage, engaging with the audience in conversations about life or friendship. Nonetheless, surprise was on everyone’s face as barely half an hour later, the band abandoned the Heineken set. To a chorus of “we want more”, keyboard player Henrik Klingenberg executed an amazing solo, and then Elias Viljanen did the same on his guitar. Out came the rest of the band and Tony spoke up, telling the audience that they had cancelled their gigs for the next two days and that they would play “ Two more songs and then I go to sleep, you have no idea how bad I feel,” he almost seemed to mumble in apology.

Barely 45 minutes after they had stepped on stage for the first time, the concert ended. The band bowed, surrounded by a full hand of applause (and some flying underwear), and there was disappointment but also comprehension on most people's behalf. Some were angry, everyone wanted more, but nonetheless, Sonata Arctica came to Madrid and by performing though they were all sick and tired, they stole everyone’s heart and demonstrated what great professionals they are.

Alucinante Sonata Arctica

Hacía frío el 28 de noviembre. Parece ser que la llegada de Winterborn, Delain y Sonata Arctica habían traído por fin el frío y el otoño a la capital de España.

Las bajas temperaturas, sin embargo, no impidieron que los fans se agolparan a las puertas de la Sala Heineken a esperar que abrieran sus puertas. A las siete en punto se comenzó a autorizar el acceso y poco a poco el auditorio se empezó a llenar.

Al entrar, descubrimos a Winterborn ya tocando en el pequeñísimo escenario. La calidad del sonido no era óptima y les faltaba un guitarrista, pero eso no impidió que el grupo lo diera todo y recibiera a cambio manos alzadas y aplausos.

Poco después, Delain, la banda proveniente de Holanda hizo su entusiasmada entrada. La sonrisa y el buen humor de Charlotte Wessels, la cantante, que no dejaba de dar las gracias a Madrid por estar ahí esa noche, eran contagiosos. El escenario tampoco era adecuado para los 5 miembros del grupo, pero la banda feliz, como se cuchicheaba por la sala hizo un gran espectáculo y sin duda animó a los asistentes.

El tiempo parecía volar y poco después el público ya estaba esperando pacientemente a que aparecieran Sonata Arctica. Después de media hora no había ni rastro del grupo Finlandés. Tras 40 minutos de espera, la gente empezó a armar bulla. El escenario estaba montado, las pruebas de sonido habían tenido lugar, pero el miedo se apodero de más de uno al recordar las cancelaciones de las últimas dos semanas.

Finalmente, después de una hora, a las diez menos diez de la noche, el instrumental de “Everything fades to gray” comenzó a sonar por los altavoces y el grupo de power metal hizo su aparición. La camisa verde fosforita de Tony pasó desapercibida ante la mascara de hospital que llevaba alrededor del cuello. Rápidamente explicó que venía del hospital y que no tenía la Gripe A, sino una gripe común. Como si nada hubiese pasado, la música de Sonata Arctica se hizo dueña de la sala.
Un compendio de canciones tanto de su nuevo disco, “ The days of grays” (“The last amazing grays,” “As if the World wasn’t ending”, o “Juliet”), como canciones de su primer CD, “Ecliptica” (el cual celebraba sus diez años), tales como “Replica” o “Fullmoon”, entre otras, sonaron a través de un aparentemente hiperactivo Tony y una banda muy cansada. Emotivo el momento en el que Charlotte volvió a salir al escenario ante la invitación de Tony para que cantase con él, “Last drop Falls”.

Hiperactivo, sin perder su sonrisa, pero sin duda, cansado y enfermo. Desde un costado se podía apreciar como Kakko al terminar cada canción suspiraba. Aprovechando que conversaba con el público sobre temas como la vida o la amistad, se sentaba en el borde del escenario. Sin embargo, los asistentes tuvieron expresiones de sorpresa cuando apenas media hora después el grupo abandonó el escenario. Tras de un grito de “queremos más”, el teclista, Henrik Klingenberg, tocó un solo, seguido por el guitarrista, Elias Viljanen. Volvieron a salir, y Tony explicó que habían tenido que cancelar los conciertos de los próximos dos días, y que tocarían dos canciones más y luego se irían a dormir; casi murmurando en tono apologético dijo que “no tenéis ni idea lo mal que me encuentro”.

45 minutos después de su inicio acababa todo. El grupo se inclinaba rodeado de aplausos (además de alguna prenda intima que cayo al escenario), y caras de desilusión pero también de comprensión. Algunos estaban furiosos, y todos querían más, pero sin duda, entre la mayoría de los presentes en Madrid esa noche, Sonata Arctica dejo una huella, aunque solo sea de su profesionalidad al tocar aún cuando estaban enfermos y cansados.

¡Feliz año nuevo! No, no es una equivocación, hace 2000 años, el 1 de noviembre era el día en el que los celtas conmemoraban el inicio del año y del invierno.

Los celtas, localizados en lo que ahora es Irlanda, Reino Unido y el norte de Francia, creían que el día antes de año nuevo la frontera entre los mundos de los vivos y los muertos se desdibujaba.
Esa noche, cuando los muertos volvían a pisar la tierra, celebraban lo que hoy conocemos como Halloween, pero que entonces era Samhain.

Vestidos con cabezas de animales y pieles los celtas se reunían alrededor de grandes fogatas y sacrificaban a animales y cultivos a las deidades. Mientras los espíritus causaban caos a su paso, los sacerdotes aprovechaban para hacer predicciones sobre el futuro.

Cuando los Romanos conquistaron el territorio celta, Samhain fue combinado con otras dos fiestas: Feralia y Pomona. La primera, era una festividad romana que honraba a los muertos, mientras que la segunda, hacía lo mismo pero con la diosa de los árboles y las frutas.

Con la llegada del Cristianismo, el Papa Bonifacio IV declaró el 1 de noviembre, Día de Todos los Santos (o en inglés antiguo Alholowmesse). La celebración, era conocida como “All-Hallows” y la noche anterior, 31 de octubre, era “All Hallows Eve”. Con el paso del tiempo paso a llamarse Halloween.
Finalmente, aunque la tradición de ir a pedir caramelos parezca algo reciente, sus raíces se encuentran son antiguas. En la Inglaterra remota, el día 2 de noviembre (Día de Todos los fieles difuntos), los ciudadanos más pobres salían a mendigar comida. A cambio de plegarias para sus familiares fallecidos, las familias les daban “soul-cakes”. Eventualmente, la práctica fue adoptada por los niños, pasando a ser “trick or treat”.

Happy New Year, or maybe not so happy for the Celts that lived 2000 years ago in what is today Ireland, the United Kingdom and northern France. Back then, on November 1st, the Celts would celebrate the end of the summer and the beginning of the winter.
It was believed, that on the night before New Year, the line between the world of the living and the dead united. On that night, October 31st, when the dead returned, the living would in turn celebrate Samhain.
Dressed with animal head and skins, the Celts would assemble around large bonfires and sacrifice animals and crops to the deities. Though the spirits caused havoc, they also made it easier for the Celtic priests to make predictions about the future.

When the Romans took over, Samhain became combined with 2 other festivals: Feralia and Pomona. The first roman festivity, was made in respect of those that had passed away, the second was to honor the goddess of trees and fruits.
By the 800’s, when Christianity spread, Pope Boniface IV, officially designated November 1, All Saints Day, a day to honor all saints and martyrs. This compound of celebrations were called in middle english Alholowmesse, and shortened to “All-Hallows”, or “All-Hallowmas”, therefore, the night before was “All-Hallows Eve”, which eventually became Halloween.

As for the now widespread tradition of trick or treating, it is believed that it all began in the All Souls Day (November 2) parades in England. On those days, poor citizens would beg for foods and families would give soul cakes to them in exchange for prayers dedicated to their deceased. Over time, the practice was taken over by children and would become the now famous “trick-or-treating”.

Vamonos al cine, ¿no?

Esta semana encontramos estrenos de diversa índole.

En primer lugar, “500 Días Juntos” único estreno de EE.UU. de esta semana. La comedia romántica, o no, según como se mire, cuenta la historia del principio y fin del amor de Tom y Summer.

Por parte de España, podremos ver en el cine “After”, “Bullying”, y “Shevernatze, una epopeya marcha atrás”.
La primera, es el reencuentro de viejos amigos que intentan huir de sus fantasmas rememorando sus juergas adolescentes.
La segunda, es el reflejo de la realidad de cómo algunos abusan de otros, simplemente porque pueden hacerlo.
Finalmente, “Shevernatze”, es un road trip a la española. Jonas, emprende un viaje marcha atrás desde Madrid a Ávila para intentar recuperar a su novia María y aparecer en el libro Guiness. En el camino se encontrara con un anciano pasajero que le incitará a seguir adelante. Mientras, María, vive un excitante intercambio de parejas con su amante. Las tres historias se acabaran entrecruzando…

Francia se alía con otros países para sacar a la luz sus producciones. Junto con Grecia y Italia, estrena “Edén al oeste” y de la mano de Canadá y Terry Gilliam “El Imaginario del Doctor Parnassus”.
“Edén al oeste”, es la historia de la vida de Elias, que culmina en Paris.
“El Imaginario del Doctor Parnassus” es la obra póstuma de Heath Ledger. El Dr. Parnassus y su Imaginario dan al público la posibilidad de elegir entre la luz y alegría o la oscuridad y la tristeza. Parnassus, tiene el don de dirigir la imaginación de los demás, pero detrás esconde el secreto de un pacto con el diablo que puede costarle la vida a su hija, Valentina.

Finalmente, el último (y esperado para muchos) estreno de esta semana es sueco: “Millenium II”, la adaptación de la novela de Stieg Larsson.

Ah, y Toy Story se puede ver ahora en 3D.

Dracula: The Un-Dead

Sin duda, están de moda los vampiros. En este auge de nuestros sanguinarios y atractivos amigos, nos encontramos con el resurgir del padre de todos los vampiros. Dracula.
De la mano de un descendiente de Bram Stoker, llega la novela “Dracula:un-dead” (Dracula- No muerto).
Lo cierto es que el otro día vi este libro en El Corte Inglés (o ¿fue en la FNAC?) y me llamó la atención aunque a la vez me pareció un tanto ridículo que si hiciera una secuela (al igual que la secuela autorizada por Margaret Mitchell de “Lo que el viento se llevo”, “Rhett Butler’s People”). Malditos Bastardos / Inglorious Basterds

Malditos Bastardos: La segunda guerra mundial en manos de Tarantino

Durante el primer año de la ocupación alemana en Francia, la joven Shosanna Dreyfus escapa de las manos del malvado coronel nazi Hans Landa.
Cada uno sigue su camino, al igual que “Los Bastardos”, un grupo de judíos americanos liderados por el teniente Aldo Raine. Su misión, nada más y nada menos que hacer sufrir a los nazis, y coleccionar sus cueros cabelludos.
Aliados con la actriz alemana Bridget von Hammersmark, llevaran acabo la “operación Kino”, cuyo objetivo es aniquilar a los lideres del Tercer Reich.
El destino querrá que Los Bastardos colaboren con Shosanna, ahora la dueña de un cine, y dispuesta a todo por venganza.

Siguiendo su línea, Tarantino nos deleita con una película llena de ansias de violencia y venganza. Es también, casi una comedia en sí misma. A través de un reflejo de la historia distorsionado pero sagazmente construido, el director nos ofrece entretenimiento y diversión delirante.
Aunque, a mi gusto no es una obra maestra, es sin duda una película que merece ser vista en algún momento, aunque sólo sea para ver a Christopher Waltz interpretando al Coronel Landa o a Brad Pitt intentando hablar italiano.

Inglorious Basterds: World War II in the hands of Quentin Tarantino

During the first year of the German occupation in France, the young girl, Shosanna Dreyfus, escapes from the evil grip of the Nazi Coronel, Hans Landa.
Each character follows its own road, just like “The Basterds”, a group of Jewish Americans, lead by Lt. Aldo Raine. Their mission is none other than to make the Nazis’ suffer and collect their scalps.
Allied with the German traitor actress, Bridget Von Hammersmark, they will conduct “operation Kino”, which aims to annihilate the leaders of the Third Reich.
Destiny will move its strings so that The Basterds team up with Shosanna, now the owner of a cinema, and willing to do anything for vengeance.

Following his usual line, Tarantino delights us with a movie full of violence and lust for revenge. The movie is also almost a comedy within itself. Through a distorted reflection of history, cunningly built, the director offers us entertainment and diversion aplenty.
Although, to my taste the movie is not a masterpiece, it is however, a movie worth seeing at some point, if only for Christopher Waltz’s interpretation as Landa or Brad Pitt trying to speak Italian.

Septiembre se acaba...pero el cine no

Empieza el otoño y llegamos al último viernes del mes de Septiembre y al contrario que la semana pasada encontramos bastantes más estrenos.

En primer lugar, Ang Lee nos trae una aproximación al mítico festival de Woodstock en su película “Destino: Woodstock”. Basada en las memorias de Elliot Tiber, el filme cuenta la experiencia que definirá a toda una generación.

Los documentales se hacen un hueco en las butacas esta semana de la mano de “OceanWorld 3D” y “The September Issue”.
La primera, nos lleva de viaje por las profundidades marinas con una tortuga como guía. El espectador podrá disfrutar de escenas submarinas nunca vistas como el ballet de la manta raya, la caza de los peces león, un encuentro con cetáceos gigantes…etc.
La segunda, se centra en Anna Wintour, editora de la versión norteamericana de Vogue y la creación de la edición de septiembre de 2007. Un edición que llego a pesar 2.5 kilos, y que fue calificada como “la biblia de la moda”.

Por su parte, Hollywood nos ofrece tres estrenos hoy. Por un lado, “El Soplón”, protagonizada por un irreconocible Matt Damon. Whitacre (Damon) un hombre corriente con delirios de grandeza denuncia a su empresa por corrupta. El FBI le pide pruebas y él se ofrece a ejercer de agente secreto…

En segundo lugar, el thriller “Los Sustitutos”. Dos agentes del FBI (Bruce Willis y Radha Mitchell) investigan el asesinato de un joven universitario que participó en la creación del fenómeno high-tech de los sustitutos. Éste es un programa que permite a la gente comprar versiones perfectas de sí mismos mientras están tranquilamente sentados en el sofá. ¿Quién es real y quién no?

Finalmente, Megan Fox se pone en la piel de Jennifer Check, una animadora que poseída por fuerzas extrañas matara a cualquiera que se le insinúe. Su amiga Needy, tendrá que enfrentarse a ella en “Jennifer’s Body”.

Argentina y España se unen para traer esta semana al cine “El secreto de tus ojos”. Expósito acaba de jubilarse y decide escribir una novela. A través de ella se dará cuenta que debe enfrentarse a su pasado y hacer frente al presente.

Recordad como siempre, que aún estáis a tiempo de ver “Malditos Bastardos”, "District 9", "La noche de su vida", "Hazme reír"....etc.

Al cine, que hoy se estrena...

Esta semana los estrenos son muy escasos, apenas tres. Sin embargo, hay un estreno que acapara todos los demás: “Inglorious Bastards” (“Malditos Bastardos”) de Quentin Tarantino.

Shosanna Dreyfus, dueña y directora de un cine, clama venganza tras ver como los nazis mataban a su familia.
Mientras tanto, en otro lugar de Europa, el teniente Aldo Raine organiza a sus hombres “Los Bastardos” para llevar a cabo rápidas represalias contra objetivos concretos. A ellos se unirá Bridget von Hammersmark, una agente secreta.

Si lo que quieres ver es una comedia, hoy se estrena “La noche de su vida”. Denis Coverman es un alumno estrella. Pero ello ha significado renunciar a muchas cosas a lo largo de su juventud, por eso, el día de su graduación durante el discurso admite su amor por la chica más popular de la clase, Beth. A partir de ahí las cosas se desmadraran y Denis vivirá la noche más alocada de su vida.

Finalmente, de mano española llega el thriller “Flores Negras”. Tras la caída del muro de Berlín, el espía Michael Roddick desaparece y se lleva con él la hija de una espía rusa muerta en extrañas circunstancias. Sin embargo, el pasado vuelve a acecharlos.

Eso es todo por hoy. Recordad que aún podéis ver otras películas como District 9, 12 trampas, Gamer, Hazme reír…etc.

Madrid is the Dark Fest

Un viento helado empezó a soplar la mañana del 12 de septiembre. Era casi como si los elementos también estuvieran esperando el festival de potente música gótica, doom y oscura que tendría lugar esa noche.

Por primera vez, Madrid y la sala Ritmo & Compás, albergaban un festival de dos días en honor a la música metal más oscura.
Más de diez grupos, provenientes tanto de España como de otros países, agraciaron el escenario con su presencia durante dos días consecutivos (11 y 12 de septiembre).

Aunque, no pudimos asistir el día 11, Two Times M, si fue participe de los increíbles conciertos que tuvieron lugar el sábado.

El show comenzó con el grupo madrileño, Aathma, y su sonido duro y gutural. Apenas una hora después, y con un público que apenas empezaba a calentar motores, Process of Guilt, subió al escenario. Su música, más alejada de los murmullos roncos del Diablo, se centro en un trance oscuro, deprimente y melódico.

Autumnal, fueron los siguientes en tocar. Aunque, inicialmente sufrieron algunas dificultades técnicas (sobre todo con su chelo, que no se oía sobre el ruido de los demás instrumentos y de las voces de los asistentes), la banda sorprendió agradablemente una vez que comenzaron.
La música, sinfónica pero con un toque rápido y agresivo, estaba acompañada por la increíblemente versátil voz del cantante, Javier de Pablo.

La sala, que hasta entonces había permanecido a medio aforo, empezó a llenarse rápidamente cuando uno de los grupos cabeza de cartel salieron al escenario: Officium Triste. La banda de Death Doom metal, proveniente de Holanda, también pasaron por algún conflicto cuando su teclado dejo de funcionar al comenzar su primera canción. El problema se soluciono pronto, y el público se entrego por completo a la banda, que acababan todas sus canciones con un “gracias, thank you, danke”, concientes que mucho de los asistentes venían de otros países.

Finalmente, a eso de medianoche, Draconian, la banda Sueca de gothic-doom metal, ocuparon sus posiciones. Los gruñidos de Anders Jacobsson’s junto con la dulce voz femenina de Lisa Johansson, crearon la perfecta simbiosis de melancolía y ‘head banging’. El grupo toco canciones tanto de su nuevo álbum “Turning Season within”, como de otros más antiguos como “Arcane Rain fell”, haciendo las delicias del público.

Desgraciadamente, apenas una hora después, en una sala replete y con un fuerte aplauso, la banda se despedía, y con ellos acababa el primer (y esperemos que no el último) Madrid is The Dark Fest.

A chilly wind began to blow the morning of September 12th, almost as if it too were waiting for the powerful torrent of doom, gothic, and dark music festival that would take place that night.
For the first time ever, Madrid and the venue Sala Ritmo & Compás, hosted a two day festival in honor of the most obscure sort of metal music.
More than ten bands, originating both from Spain and other countries world wide, graced the stage with their presence for two days (September 11 and 12th).

Although, we were unable to assist on the 11th, Two Times M, was a participant of the incredible concerts that took place on Saturday.
The show began with the energetic Madrid trio, Aathma, and their rough and guttural sound. Barely an hour later, and with an audience slowly warming up, Process of Guilt took the stage. Their music, a little lacking in devilish grunts, was compensated by a captivating melodic death trance.
Autumnal invaded the stage next. Though they initially went through some technical difficulties with their cello, (which could not be heard over the din of the audience and the other instruments), the band surprised agreeably once they began. The music, symphonic and with a rapid furious edge to it, was accompanied by the incredibly volatile voice of Javier de Pablo.

The joint, which up until then had only been half full, quickly became packed as the first stellar band of the evening went on stage: Officium Triste. The Death Doom metal band from Holand, also had to undergo some adversity when their keyboard went mute during their first song. The problem was solved quickly and the audience gave their all to the musicians, which politely finished every song with a “gracias, thank you, danke”, conscious that many of the assistants were from different places.

Finally, at close to midnight, Draconian, the Swedish gothic doom metal group took their places. Anders Jacobsson’s rough growls mixed with the sweet voice of female singer, Lisa Johansson, created the perfect symbiosis of melancholy and head banging. The band played songs from both their new album, “Turning Seasons Within” and older albums like “Arcane Rain fell”, delighting all of those assisting.

Unfortunately, barely an hour later, they were saying goodbye and with a full house and a reverberating round of applause, the first (and we hope not the last) Madrid is the Dark fest came to an end.

RIP Patrick Swayze

Patrick Swayze, conocido actor de hits como “Dirty Dancing”, “Ghost” o “The Outsiders”, a muerto ayer Lunes a los 57 años tras un duro cáncer de páncreas.

Tras una lucha que duró más de 20 meses, Swayze ha fallecido en casa junto a su familia, ha declarado su publicista Annett Wolf.

Fue en Marzo de 2008, cuando tuvimos noticias de su enfermedad terminal, pero aún así, el actor siguió trabajando, tanto en sus memorias como en la serie “The Beast”.

Sin duda, Swayze será recordado tanto como persona como actor. "Nobody puts Patrick in the corner."

Annett Wolf, Swayze’s publicist declared on Monday evening, “ Patrick Swayze passed away peacefully today with family at his side after facing the challenges of his illness for the last 20 months.”

It was in March 2008, when we first heard about the actors illness, but that did not stop him from working on both his memoirs and the series, “The Beast.”

Without doubt, Swayze will be remembered both as a person and an exceptional actor. "Nobody puts Patrick in the corner."

´Viernes, día de estrenos

Por fin llega a España la nueva película de Peter Jackson “District 9”. Hace más de 20 años los alienígenas contactaron con el planeta tierra. Al contrario de lo que muchos esperaban, no buscaban atacar el planeta azul, sino refugio. Eran los últimos de su raza. Los seres humanos no les acogen de buen agrado, y los encarcelan en el llamado Distrito 9, localizado en Sudáfrica.

John Cena, conocido luchador de Pressing Catch, se mete en el papel del policía Danny Fisher en “12 trampas”. Un renombrado ladrón se escapa con un gran botín, sin embargo su novia muere accidentalmente. El criminal volverá para vengarse de Danny con toda clase de trampas.

El 3D empieza a ponerse de moda…Hollywood nos trae esta semana un remake de la película 1981 “San Valentín sangriento”. Cinco personas mueren tras un accidente minero, sólo hay un sobreviviente: Harry Warden. El día de San Valentín éste se despierta tras un año de coma y asesina a veintidós personas.
Diez años después el responsable del accidente minero, Tom Hanniger vuelve al pueblo de Harmony, y con el un oscuro pasado con sed de venganza.William Wilberforce, un joven político británico se encuentra con la triste realidad de la esclavitud en “Amazing Grace” y se convierte en la voz pública de los Abolicionistas en el Reino Unido.

Sid, huye de los negocios turbios de su padre y se adentra en el Taiwán más profundo en “El latido de la montaña”. Ahí conocerá a un grupo de percusionistas que le mostraran un mundo totalmente distinto al que conocía.

Will, es un joven perdedor acostumbrado a ser ignorado por sus compañeros de clase. Todo cambiara cuando la popular Charlotte, le invita a salir con su grupo y formar parte de su banda de Rock. Ahí, en “School rock band” conocerá a Sam.

Finalmente, el cine español nos presenta dos comedias esta semana.
En primer lugar, “Gordos”. Cinco historias que giran en torno a un grupo de terapia que intenta descifrar porque tienen sobrepeso.
En segundo lugar, “Pájaros Muertos”. En una urbanización comienzan a morir pájaros en extrañas circunstancias. Un equipo de profesionales se traslada a la zona para investigar y narrar lo que esta ocurriendo no solo con los animales, sino también con los vecinos.

Poco a poco se acaba el veranito. El tiempo se enfría...pero el cine sigue ahí.

Está semana encontramos dos estrenos Europeos.
Por un lado, “Agallas”. Película de producción española, cuenta la historia de Sebastián (Hugo Silva), un recluso recién liberado que encuentra un trabajo un tanto dudoso en la empresa “Isolina, Productos del Mar”.

Desde Francia nos llega el drama romántico “La clienta”. Judith tiene unos cincuenta años y una vida aparentemente normal. Sin embargo, se dedica a contratar regularmente los servicios sexuales de chicos jóvenes por Internet. En una de estas citas, conocerá a Patrick, cuyo verdadero nombre es Marco y está casado con Fanny, la cual piensa que su marido se dedica a la construcción.

Ya desde la meca del cine, nos llegan dos comedias, un drama y un thriller.

“Gamer”, protagonizada por Gerard Butler, nos introduce en un mundo donde los humanos están controlados por otros humanos y la tecnología del control mental está en auge. Ken Castle (Michael C. Hall) es el creador del nuevo boom en la industria del juego: Slayer. En este juego de disparos en primera persona, en la cual se utilizan prisioneros reales, Kable (Butler) deberá luchar para salvar su vida, la de su familia y la de la humanidad.

En “Frozen River”, Ray Eddy tendrá que luchar contra la adversidad para volver a tener dinero. Junto a su amiga Lila, se dedicaran a introducir inmigrantes chinos y paquistaníes de contrabando. Detrás familias y sueños rotos las aguardan, junto con la policía.

Finalmente, en el género de las risas, encontramos a uno de los reyes, Adam Sandler.
Sandler, nos trae “Hazme Reír”, en la cual tras sufrir un aparatoso accidente que casi lo mata, vuelve a tener una segunda oportunidad. ¿Seguirá siendo el capullo de siempre?

Ben Affleck, Jennifer Aniston, Drew Barrymore, Jennifer Connelly, Justin Long, Scarlett Johansen… se unen para tejer las distintas aventuras amorosas en "Qué les pasa a los hombres." En ella, un grupo de veintañeros y treintañeros, intentan entender como funcionan las relaciones amorosas...

Based on the non-fiction book "Public Enemies: America's Greatest Crime Wave and the Birth of the FBI, 1933–34." by Brian Burrough, the film tells the story of agent Melvin Purvis's attempt to arrest John Dillinger, and other known criminales of the epoque.
With both an amazing Johnny Depp (John Dillinger) and Christian Bale (Melvin Purvis), the film easily takes you back to a depressed America, where some gangsters were considered true heroes.
Although the acting was not deficient in any way (both lead roles almost eat up the screen with their mere presence), and the scenarios and costumes seemed accurate, something seemed to be amiss.
There was emotion, there was laughter, there were nerves, but, one leaves the movie theater thinking..."that's it?"
Nonetheless, Public Enemies will do for an entertaining and engaging afternoon movie.

Basado en el libro, “Public Enemies: America's Greatest Crime Wave and the Birth of the FBI, 1933–34." de Brian Burrough, la película cuenta la historia del agente Melvin Purvis y su intento de arrestar a John Dillinger y otros criminales de la época.

Con un Johnny Depp (John Dillinger) y Christian Bale (Melvin Purvis) asombrosos (ambos se comen la pantalla con cada aparición), la cinta nos transporta rápidamente a un Estados Unidos deprimido y en el cual algunos gángsters llegaban a ser considerados verdaderos héroes.

Aunque la actuación por parte del elenco no fue deficiente, y los escenarios y vestuarios eran correctos, parecía como si algo faltara.

Hay emoción, risas, nervios, pero, cuando sales del cine lo único que piensas es, ¿eso es todo?

Aún así, “Enemigos Públicos” es una buena película para una relajante y entretenida tarde.

Y tras las vacaciones...volvemos al cine!

Tras mi pequeña desaparición por vacaciones, regreso con los nuevos estrenos de esta semana.

Empecemos por "American Playboy". Una comedia romántica protagonizada por Ashton Kushter. Kushter se mete en el papel de un joven playboy que se dedica a seducir a mujeres para sonsacarles todo el dinero posible. Las cosas cambiaran cuando le seduzcan a él.
Seguimos con las risas en “Año Uno”. Jack Black y Michael Cera son desterrados de su poblado y deben enfrentarse a la historia de la humanidad.

Para los más jóvenes encontramos “Shorts: La Piedra mágica”. Una piedra con poderes mágicos cae del cielo y cambia la vida del niño de 11 años, Toe Thompson. Junto con sus amigos darán vida a todo lo que han imaginado y más. El problema empezará cuando los adultos encuentren la piedra.

Finalmente, en el género de la comedia encontramos a una Umma Thurman ejerciendo de madre en la película “Una mamá en apuros”. Eliza debe hacer frente a sus deberes como madre, un equipo de rodaje, un perro con incontinencia y su deseo de ser escritora, todo en un día.

Sin embargo, si lo que quieres es un poco de dramatismo en tu vida, esta semana se estrena “Mapa de los sonidos de Tokyo” de la española Isabel Coixet. Tres distintas historias se entrelazan y giran alrededor de la joven Ryu, trabajadora en una pescadería y asesina a sueldo.

El cine no olvida a los amantes del terror y trae esta semana a “Expediente 39” con Renée Zellweger . Una trabajadora de servicios sociales se lleva a una joven niña de 10 años a su casa mientras espera una familia que quiera acogerla. Mientras tanto cosas muy raras empiezan a ocurrir.

En fin, eso es todo por esta semana. Disfrutad del cine y del buen tiempo.
Ah, y recordad que en cartelera aún se pueden encontrar películas como “Enemigos Públicos”, “Antichrist”, “Ong bak 2”…etc.

Pensaba actualizar esto el viernes...pero lo cierto es que estoy de vacaciones y muuuuuy vaga...

Entre el soldado y la risa...En el cine

Aunque el estreno protagonista de esta semana es la producción hollywoodiense de Stephen Sommers “G.I. Joe”, la comedia ocupa buena parte de la cartelera.

Basada en los famosos muñecos de la marca Hasbro, “G.I. Joe” narra la historia del equipo militar más avanzado del mundo, los G.I. Joe, y como deben enfrentarse al malévolo Destro y su organización Cobra.

Siguiendo con el tema de los soldaditos, nos encontramos con una sátira al nazismo: “Mein Führer”. Año 1944, Berlín está prácticamente perdido, pero Goebbels (ministro de propaganda nazi) se propone mostrar a un Hitler más agresivo que nunca ante el público. Sus planes se verán truncados cuando se encuentre al Führer más desmoralizado que nunca y tenga que sustituirle por un actor judío.

La historia también está presente en la comedia “N, Napoleón y yo”. Ambientada en el pueblo de Elbe, en el año 1814, Martino un joven profesor anti Napoleón, es obligado a grabar las memorias del emperador.

De tintes más modernos y románticos, nos topamos con las comedias “Mi vida en ruinas” y “Hechizo de verano”.

La primera, tiene lugar en Grecia, donde la joven guía turística, Georgia, descubre el amor entre quien menos se lo espera.
En la segunda, todos los sentimientos y los personajes de una pareja de actores que acaban de romper, se encuentran en el Festival de Aviñon.

Finalmente, el miedo y el terror tienen lugar esta semana en “Exorcismo en Connecticut”. La vida de la familia Campbell se verá alterada cuando se muden a su nueva casa, un lugar con un oscuro pasado.

Al cine! que ahí hace fresquito :p

Y recordad, Harry Potter, UP, La Proposición, Arrastame al Infierno, Asalto al tren Pelham...etc. aún siguen en cartelera.

Y esta semana en la gran pantalla...

Empieza agosto y para muchos las vacaciones, pero el cine no descansa.

Para empezar, ayer se estreno la nueva película de Disney y Pixar: “Up”
La historia es la de Carl, un anciano que por fin cumple el sueño de su vida de vivir una gran aventura cuando ata miles de globos a su casa, haciéndola volar.

Para los más jóvenes, llega “Sex Drive” dirigida por Sean Anders. Ian Lafferty (Josh Zuckerman) es un joven de 18 años que decide recorrer medio Estados Unidos junto a sus mejores amigos para perder la virginidad con una chica que conoció por Internet.

Las mentiras no traen nada bueno, o al menos eso es lo que nos dicen de pequeños. Pero, para Thea, la protagonista de “Un trabajo embarazoso”, mentir sobre un embarazo hace que por fin empiece a ascender profesionalmente.

Pasamos de una mujer ambiciosa a otra, de la mano de Sam Raimi encontramos “Arrastrame al infierno”. Christine, apoderada de un banco, desahucia a una anciana para poder ascender en la empresa. A cambio, la anciana la maldecirá, convirtiendo su vida en una espiral de terror.

Situada en Sur África, el oscarizado John Malkovitch, interpreta a David Lurie, un profesor de universidad que seduce a una alumna negra en “Desgracia”. Para huir de la hecatombe que desemboca, decide esconderse en la granja de su hija. Ésta será victima de una agresión sexual, que llevará al profesor a una espiral de odio y venganza.

La venganza también juega un papel primordial en “ Ashes of time redux”. Wong Kar Wai presenta una nueva versión de su “Ashes of Time” (1994), donde el amor y los combates marciales son los protagonistas.

Finalmente, “Rojo Oriental”, narra la historia de una viuda cuarentona que derrumba las habituales convenciones orientales.

Como siempre recordad que en cartelera continúan películas como Harry Potter, La Proposición, Asalto al Tren Pelham, Imago Mortis… ¡Buena Sesión!
